What is this? I see it on FreeRepublic from time to time and do not know what it means.

It's a polite way of invoking the Almighty.
I don't know the origins, but it may have had it's outgrowth from
the (AFAIK) the Jewish name for the Almighty which was without vowels.

I'm no expert on this...and hope more the more knowledgeable will help out...
