A day in the life of President Bush (photos) 12/14/04

TODAY'S HIGHLIGHT: GWB awarded the nation's highest civilian honor -- the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- Ambassador L. Paul "Jerry" Bremer, former CIA Director George Tenet, and retired U.S. Army General Tommy Franks.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: General Tommy Franks was raised in Midland, Texas -- nothing wrong with that. (Laughter.) I didn't know him then, but Laura and he went to the same high school. In those days, some people in Midland wondered about Tommy's future. It sounds familiar. (Laughter.) At a recent high school reunion, Tommy's old principal told the General, "You weren't the brightest bulb in the socket," to which the General replied, "Ain't this a great country?" (Laughter.) -- President George W. Bush, Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony, 12/14/04

Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island.

I'll bet! Poor guy still probably has those high Iraq temperatures in his system. He needs to thicken up his blood for these IL winters.

Your quote of the day was also the final 'humorous' video on Brit Hume's program tonight.

Great minds - and all that!!!

it was thrilling when tommy Franks & bob Dole were surprise extras when President Bush make the last stop in lakewood Ohio a few days before the election. the crowd of nealy 25,000 went completely crazy when Franks name was mentioned. NO FOREWARNING.

I was 10 feet from podium. have some excellent pictures

Thanks for telling me since I won't have a chance to see Brit's show tonight. As mentioned above, the President was especially charming today, and seemed to me to be at his warmest and most comfortable with Tommy Franks.

**It sure seem to me that some of those remarks were made out of context and Bremer came out fighting about it.

He went onto all the news shows to set it straignt IIRC.**

I remember that though cannot remember in detail all that was said but IMHO I felt at the end of it that possibly I might give him some benefit of the doubt but it still left me feeling a little uncomfortable overall. Just my thoughts.

That was one of the things I always wondered about: How many events did the CIA and/or the Department of Homeland Security prevent that we don't know about? I would imagine there are a lot of things they couldn't tell us. And someone (I can't remember who) explained that there were some things that the terrorists didn't realize that we were responsible for disrupting, there were some things that were ongoing, there some things that could put people's lives at risk if details were revealed, etc. So anyway, that's one of the reasons I prefer to give George Tenet the benefit of the doubt.

Hi snugs, long time no chat!
I feel bad for being so busy these last few months but it's worth it for our soldiers.
I hope that your parents are doing OK!
On Sunday I lost another soldier friend, this time in Iraq. That hurts!!

PHOTO ALERT!

Hi everyone. Haven't posted in a while. Saw this today on the Latest Articles thread and felt it my duty to share. Article was in the Washington Post today.

January issue of Vogue magazine will feature photos of President Bush and Laura. Can't wait to see these photos!

Main photo is in the Oval Office. President Bush is in his shirt sleeves leaning back in his chair pushed away from the desk to make room for Laura who is sitting on his desk. Annie Leibovitz was the photographer.

Article says that there are a couple of older photos of the couple and one of Laura in a navy evening dress. Does anyone have an idea when Vogue usually hits the newsstand? I can't wait to see this.

Wonderful picture of our Pres. and Laura (even tho he's wearing my least-fav. green tie--yes, I know I'm in the minority not liking it but I like to stir up fashion controversy--HAHA!)!

After the ceremony, after the Pres. and Laura and the guests of honor walked out, I think I caught a glimpse of Laura's mom walking out. Anyone else see her? Laura said in some interview that she was there for the holidays . . . how nice for her to be included.

I'm envious. That must have been such a thril and a memory you'll treasure for the rest of your life. BTW, the crowds GWB was drawing in the last weeks before the election should have told the media something big was a'coming.

I can't remember any details either really.

But like you after the whole thing settled down I did feel better.

Maybe the media did just a partial quote or something?

Then Bremer went to give the full story?

Did the Pres. write the actual citations that were read by the military aide just before he put the medals on them? He was nodding along like he had written them, or at least knew what they said. Really nice!
