Oh, really? You need to take another look at The Compromise of 1850. This was pushed by those who would later argue strongly in favor of states rights. If that compromise wasn't a federal power grab, I don't know what is.

NEW YORK Even as a new Gallup poll shows that the public values “values” less than November exit polls suggested, another survey from the same outfit released today showed a historic surge in Republican party affiliation.
In Gallup's latest poll this month, those identifying themselves as Republicans jumped to 37% of the public, with Democrats now clearly trailing with 32%.
Democrats have long held more party members than Republicans. During the Clinton years, the bulge was about 5% to 6%. As recently as late-October of this year the Democratic edge was 37% to 34%.
Gallup noted today: “Post-election shifts in partisanship after presidential elections or midterm congressional elections are not routine, but are also not uncommon.”
Another Gallup poll also released today showed that, contrary to many press reports, “values” ranked well behind the war in Iraq, terrorism and the economy as a prime concern of Americans.

When the Republicans take a noticeable stand for things that will reduce socialism, I'll be a little more optimistic.

I don't think you know what federalism means. It is the version of limited government envisioned by the founders of the constitution. The problem isn't that we are tilting toward federalism, but away from it.
Good news, but let us not forget that there are a lot of RINO's that we put in office. We haven't left the GOP, but at times it leaves us. Nevertheless, I still believe in the party of Lincoln and hopefully it will come back to it's center. As for the RATS, they continue to waller in the quick sand..........

I'm with you but rarely is there any significant movement in any direction at that level of purity. Ask the DU'ers if they're anywhere near the level of socialist purity THEY'D like to see. Right about now I'd say they definitely think they're losing.
Politics is the art of the possible. The dependence on government largesse and legislation from the bench is insidious and will take at least a century to cure (hence the tendency toward Democrat Lite on the part of too many Republicans). For one thing, we need to start teaching economics on a pretty serious level at a very early age.
We should start with a course called the Facts of Life, in which students learn that:
a) the world doesn't owe you a @#$% thing just for existing -- you will EARN your way to whatever you want, and even when you do, do not expect to be always treated fairly;
b) screaming obscenities or tagging walls or running around the room are NOT just other means of expression -- they are activities ranging from simply rude behavior to vandalism, and there WILL BE CONSEQUENCES...
c) nobody in the working world gives a rat's rear-o about your self-esteem, so within certain broad limits, neither do we;
d) contrary to popular opinion it is NOT true that anything short of a pain-free life is proof of oppression or conspiracy;
e) if you borrow money, you HAVE to pay it back. There is no not paying it back if you are a man or woman of honor and respectability, so think BEFORE you borrow and always shop around for a better deal first.
f) unless you can offer overwhelming clinical evidence that you are truly mentally ill or incapacitated (in which case someone will have to offer it for you), YOU and ONLY YOU -- NOT YOUR BACKGROUND OR GENETICS -- are responsible for your behavior. You are not an animal; you are a human with a built-in manual over-ride switch labeled "No."
Some would argue that Lincoln was how this non-conservative Republican movement got started. See, Lincoln had this BIG problem with States Rights...
This January will tell us a lot about what the Republican Majority in the Congress will do, What the President will Do and the appointment of the Supreme Court Nominees.
So far, with the Homeland Security Act that just passed being an indicator, we are not going to get as much as we thought we would..... again. How the Immigration problem is handled, the deportation of Illegal Aliens. The ACLU problem, Activist Judges being removed, Abortion, Same Sex Marriage. The Socialist Agenda must be turned back!! We Americans DO NOT WANT SOCIALISM. Neither party seems to hear us.
I have posted this before, but here goes again.Both Parties keep a close track of their Base and the number of voters in that base. If there is a movement of voters from the registered voters of the Party they want to know why and where they are going.
I know this because I have worked for the Republican Party. So if they are not going to begin rolling back the Socialist Crap that the Dimms put in Place, removing the judges and start cleaning house, we need to re register as another Politcal Party. You can still vote how ever you want to vote, but the base has moved from the party. Believe me, when they start seeing their base leave! They will be coming home to find out why, holding meetings and sending out flyers trying to find out what is going on.
Then when we have their EAR >>> Finally, we can tell them to get on the Stick and start doing what we elected them for!! Protecting our Borders, Sound and sensable Immigration Policy that makes US Citizenship worth working for and to apply LEGALLY!! Removing the Activist Judges, Stopping Abortions etc. When the BASE starts to leave in Droves they will start to feel it immediately and change their tune just as fast!
We need people with common sense, Pro American and Pro Constitution and Pro God!

Some are confusing opposition to slavery with opposition to state's rights. The Founders did not intend for EVERYTHING to be determined as each individual state saw fit, hence the bill of rights. 3/5ths clause and their own ownership of slaves notwithstanding, I seriously doubt slavery was something the Founders ultimately wanted left up to the states.
I am a Card Carrying Republican! Can't even stand to look at Pelosi!! I am open for suggestions, pick apart and critize my suggestion Please. What are your suggestions to get these very important points passed into law. I would like to just appeal to the Conservative Majority in the Congress and feel confident that they would act to protect the Borders and pass sensible Immigration Laws. Why is it that we do not feel confident that the Congress will do what is necessary. Your suggestions please!
