SECRET SHACK: Homeless man lived for years under a bridge Associated Press 12/13/2004

CHICAGO - For three or four years, a homeless man achieved the impossible: He found a cheap place to live on pricey Lake Shore Drive. Actually, Richard Dorsay lived under Lake Shore Drive, in a wooden shack built into the beams and girders of the drawbridge that crosses the Chicago River. On Sunday, Dorsay was evicted after another man arrested in suburban Streamwood told police about the home under the bridge.

Police arrested Dorsay at the bridge Thursday. He was taken to Streamwood, where he was released without being charged. He was, however, charged in Chicago with criminal trespass to property, a misdemeanor.

Dorsay's father came by the police station Sunday to take him to his home in Burr Ridge. "I've always hoped that he would find a place and he would seek employment," Gary Dorsay told the Sun-Times. "He is strong enough and bright enough to do something."

Mayor Richard Daley said Dorsay illustrates the homelessness problem in the city.

"They're there for a reason, for shelter," the mayor said. "And that's the concern we share."

This guy obviously doesn't know how to work the system here in Chicago. He could've had a nice Section 8 apartment paying a fraction of what his neighbors pay, a welfare check, food stamps, and panhandle outside Walgreens for tax-free booze money.

Off topic:

37 homeless in Asheville, NC are so chronic in their arrests and medical emergencies that it cost the city $21,600 per year to arrest, jail, relase,(repeat multiple times) tranport via ambulance, treat, release (transport mulitple times).

That's $800,000/yr. for 37 people.

"Send him to Santa Rosa, CA. Nice weather (albeit a bit rainy this time of the year), plenty of other homeless to socialize with, great parks to sleep in, homeless encampments under every bridge. Why, this is Homeless Heaven!"

Here in San Antonio Texas he'd find a Wino's paradise too. We just had "Christmas Under The Bridge" last weekend.

"At least they got one off the streets."

C'mon, he wasn't really on the streets--- he was under 'em.

Errrr...NO! ;o)

Don't need to.
They have what they need,
including their own government.

It's a shame. Asheville is a beautiful city, but there are a lot of bums there. Several years agao, I heard that the city was banning pan-handling, but the ACLU was fighting it. Do you know what happened?

Haven't heard about the panhandleing issue.

The Downtown is home to a multitude of various homeless, winos, runaways etc. I'm sure its no worse than big cities, but for it's size, I'd say the population of these types is disproportional.

Nah, "Da Mare" Daley will just sell off this eyecatching home to foreigners just like he did the Skyway!

I think the city was going to make it illegal for them to ask for money. It certainly would help with tourism. People don't like to be accosted when they're walking around.

37 homeless in Asheville, NC... (cost to the city) $800,000/yr

For $21,622 each/yr, they could rent themselves some mighty fine digs with plenty left over for booze and entertainment every weekend at the Orange Peel. The food, medical and other is extra and naturally taken care of by the Feds/NC.

Why are you people in Asheville so heartless as to keep hassling them and forcing them out of the Square so they periodically leave and bother surrounding towns like Hendersonville? We have enough homeless hanging around as it is!

Besides, when they are out of town on another gig, I miss getting panhandled outside the Municipal Parking Garages and Malaprops. Somehow, the "local flavor" is gone!

Surely not the same Mayor Daley who illegally destroyed Chicago's Meigs Field in the middle of the night so he could turn the land into a park dedicated to himself? Surely not THAT selfish, liberal a**hole, so concerned for his fellow man???

Santa Monica, CA & Santa Barbara, CA are nice places for homeless people. In fact, Santa Monica welcomes them with open arms.

Sarcasm aside, I didn't know about the homeless problem in Santa Barbara until I found some stuff ripped off of my bike that was in the back of my truck. Some people mentioned there were a lot of homeless who wander around.

Or close it down like he did Meigs Field. What a travesty! I hope the petition to reopen it as a park and airfield is successful.

This guy wasn't homeless. The article clearly says he had a shack under the bridge.

When will urinalists print the truth?
