Hamas: Hosted in the USA by a Russian company

If one causes the English Hamas site palestine-info.co.uk to produce an error message, by asking for a file that isn't on the server, e.g.

http://palestine-info.co.uk/fubar.html

The error page that comes up is this:

http://atlex.ru/404.phtml

This makes sense, since I had previously connected this site with atlex.ru

See:

Hamas site prepares to resume operations in the US

DNS service for this domain is provided by the following:

ns1.host-telecom.com 66.36.240.248
ns2.host-telecom.com 66.36.246.112

Both atlex.ru and host-telecome.com are registered to the same man in Moscow:

domain: ATLEX.RU
type: CORPORATE
descr: ATLEX.Ru company
state: REGISTERED, DELEGATED
person: Pavel V Chernobrov

Domain name: HOST-TELECOM.COM
Administrative Contact:
Chernobrov, Pavel
Moscow, Moscow RU

If anyone can confirm or rule out a connection between altex.ru and Allegiance Telecom in Dallas I'd love to hear from you.

Meanwhile, as we've noted repeatedly here, palestine-info.co.uk is the official English-language site of designated Terrorist group Hamas, and network access is provided by:

Hamas online, a demographic sketch

We sampled the IP addresses of users of two offical Arabic-language Hamas sites over a four day period. The result was 84 unique IP addresses which we resolved by netblock and nation/territory of origin.

Rank Country/Territory Percentage
First PS 12.82%
Second US 11.54%
Third CA, AE 8.87%
Fourth DE, FR, JO, IL 6.41%
Fifth MA, SA 5.13%
Sixth GB 3.85%
Seventh IT, YE 2.65%

Bringing up the rear were individuals from Indonesia, Australia, Sweden, Ireland, Lebanon, Syria, Austria, Spain, Algeria and Switzerland.

While the Palestinian territories coming in first is hardly surprising, we think it noteworthy that the United States ranks second, and Canada is tied for third place with the United Arab Emirates. Combined, the USA and Canada account for roughly 20% of the visitors to the Hamas sites. In light of recent statements from Hamas declaring the United States to be an enemy, this should be of some concern. While numerically we are only talking about 16 people, two things can be said with a fair amount of certainty:

1. 16 people are capably of doing quite a lot of damage and causing a great many deaths if they so choose.

2. 16 leads are not so many that they can't be chased down - again the question is the will to do so.

What is less certain is just how interested any given reader of an official Arabic-language Hamas site is in being an active-duty terrorist. I would take these numbers with a grain of salt, and mostly as a sign of the degree to which our societies are penetrated by Hamas supporters.

Update:

We increased the sample size by 20%, and there were no dramatic changes:

Rank Country/Territory Percentage
First PS 14.74%
Second US 11.58%
Third DE 9.47%
Fourth CA, AE, IL 7.37%
Fifth FR, SA 6.32%
Sixth JO 5.26%
Seventh GB, MA 4.21%
Eighth IT, YE, LB 2.11%

Canada slipped to fourth, but the US and Canada still account for a bout 20%. Germany rose to third, two points behind the USA.Posted by aaron at December 11, 2004 10:50 AM

Ping to a Hamas find that you will want to think about.

How does this tie into the threads of yesterday, that said it was time to start the wondering if we will be attacked around the holidays?

I would start searching in San Francisco, as the callers to
KGO often support the Arafat group. ( And speak with an accented voice.)
