the original issue about the nanny, was "outed" by Kerik himself. the subsequent smears of his affairs, his "mob" connections, his stock options, alleged gifts, etc - that's the smear job.

...but Patiki has, and didn't use, the bully pulpit..

Pataki did more than use the bully pulpit in 2003 and where did it get him?

In 2003 Pataki vetoed various parts of the budget given to him by the state legislature. His vetoes were overridden.

If the legislators and the people who vote for them don't give a damn about high spending in NY -- then why should the governor?

The Kerik thing is regrettable, to be sure. He LOOKED like a good nominee. But there are people who rise to the top without under-the-table nannies and sending goons out to roust people you think pinched some minor piece of property. The "urban environment" excuse is for rappers and NBA stars.

Maybe their security teams should get a grip on theirs? Don't push someone who is afraid too far. Their reactions are not always what you would consider reasonable.

When Pataki was finally sent the budget on August 20th, he responded with 195 vetoes.

Bull, When your party unanimously overrides your veto you know the fix is in.

Look at his history, It's only recently since he has national aspirations that he is pretending to be somewhat conservative with these "Show" vetoes

Pataki is the most Liberal govenor in the country, His record

TAXES

New York has the highest taxes in the country on EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

SPENDING

Under Pataki New York even though it has ~15 million fewer people it still spends more than California. In 2002 Both New York and California spent $90 Billion dollars. In 2003 with both facing hugh deficits Grey Davis at least proposed some cuts while Pataki even with NY facing a $10 Billion dollar deficit actually increased spending by $4 Billion.

And that $90 Billion number is actually way more since unlike California which has Prop. 13 Pataki can and does push massive unfunded mandates onto the counties (most notably Medicaid). Almost every county in NY has had double digit property tax increases consecutively the past couple of years.

Year Budget in Billions
1995

59.0

1996

63.8

1997

66.1

1998

71.9

1999

72.7

2000

76.8

2001

79.6

2002

88.6

2003

93.0

2004

99.8

2005

101

BTW Texas with population just little above NY spent $67 Billion in 2002, And their counties do not have anywhere near the big property tax burdens like NY. Let me assure you the difference between NY and California and Texas is not due to the cost of snow removal.

HEALTH CARE

Pataki has also socialized medicine in NY more than Hillary ever dreamed. Right now 1/6 New Yorkers are on the state medicaid dole with more to come because even with a $10 Billion deficit in 2003 Pataki still plans on adding 720,000 more people onto the state doles via his Family health Plus and Healthy NY medicaid schemes. http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/fhplus/index.htm

And lets not forget New York's smoking ban is much more draconian than California's passed it and Pataki signed it.

2nd ADMENDMENT

I don't think so see

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1095868/posts

and

GOVERNOR PATAKI SIGNS LEGISLATION TO COMBAT GUN VIOLENCE

Quote

"Governor George E. Pataki today signed into law comprehensive legislation to combat gun violence, including a provision that makes New York the first state to close the so-called gun show loophole by requiring background checks on prospective purchasers for all sales at all gun shows.

The law also requires that firearms be sold with child safety locks; imposes a State ban on assault weapons; raises the minimum age to obtain a permit to purchase a handgun to 21 years old; implements a DNA for Handguns program; establishes a gun trafficking interdiction program; and, directs a study to be conducted on "smart gun" technology."

Environment,

The same thing especially with upstate where there is the Forever Wild clause.

And even though the rest of the country rejected it, Pataki is actually going forward in implementing the Kyoto protocol on global warming.

A little more on the insanity of New York

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/970596/posts

Believe me after moving from New York to New Jersey, After living under Pataki I really had a hard time hating Mcgreevy.

Only RINO governors who passed on serving in uniform when they were young men. May be this can be his "service".

I'm sorry, Pataki is a complete disaster. To say he is better than Cuomo, although possibly true, does not explain away his record.

The before and after items are what tells the tale.

We have the highest taxes of anywhere. There are never proposed spending cuts, never increased freedoms, never bills to cut waste fraud and abuse.

You can delude yourself into thinking Pataki has been good for NY, I, on the contrary, think he has made this state worse than from when he took office.

The simple statements of fact that I made on this thread are true. Anything else you read into my posts -- is your dilusion.

BTW, posters who claim to speak for many people (e.g. "the country") are dilusional.

Are there really any qualifications to be the Director of Homeland Security, other than the ability to get in front of a podium and say "the security level has just been raised to orange"?

I don't believe all these leaks (especially the idiotic Lieberman notion), but having said that, I gained a lot of respect for Pataki during his speech at the RNC when he ripped the clinton administration:

Speech

You know the history. Osama bin Laden declared war on America -- and then came the attacks -- the first World Trade Center, the embassies, the USS Cole -- hundreds dead, thousands injured.

How I wish the administration at that time, in those years had done something.

How I wished they had moved to protect us -- But — they — didn't — do -it.

On September 11th Al Qaeda attacked again. But this time they made a terrible mistake.

There’s one thing they didn’t bank on.

They didn’t bank on George W. Bush.

He didn’t run from history. He faced it.

Not that I'm for Pataki, mind you...but I'm cleary on record as never believing the Lieberman nonsense.

But Pataki would be miles better than Lieberman.
