Until the mid-1960's, national Democratic Party leaders had a "sweetheart" deal with state Democrats in South Carolina to oppress African-Americans by keeping them in inferior schools, dilapidated housing and denying them equal access to public accommodations, retiring Sen. Fritz Hollings, D-SC, revealed on Sunday.
"We had a sweetheart deal with the National Democratic Party," he told CBS's "60 Minutes." "Well go along with all your programs, if youll go along with our segregation."
The 83-year-old Democrat said that political pressure forced him, for instance, to vote against the confirmation of Thurgood Marshall, the first black to be nominated to the Supreme Court, saying it would have cost him his Senate seat to do otherwise. "I couldn't get re-elected," Hollings explained. "And if I had voted for him, I might as well withdraw from the race."
Though he said he felt extremely guilty about opposing Marshall, Hollings took the opportunity of his last big media interview to bash the lone black in President Bush's second cabinet, Condoleezza Rice.
"She ought to go back to teaching Russian or whatever it was," the one-time Dixiecrat complained. "I've been in security, I've been working on intelligence. And for her to come on to the television, and saying on 9/11 there was nothing specific. Nothing specific. You don't say that."
Hollings is no stranger to racial controversy. In 1993 he told reporters that African leaders then attending a Geneva trade conference seemed like cannibals.
"Rather than eat each other, they'd just come up (to Switzerland) and get a good square meal," he joked.
Thank God he's out of the Senate. Hollings is an embarrassment and a cad. My son lives in SC, and no one likes Hollings -- he was elected by fancy pants Carolinians from the east side of the state.
She was provost from 1993-99. Prior to that, though, she taught political science at Stanford from 1981-93, not Russian. However, in Hollings' defense, she did teach courses on Russian politics, I believe.
Lib/dems are such political whores.....
LOL!
***I can't believe the old f*** actually admitted this!***
Maybe Fritz is worried about how he'll spend eternity.
1. It was problematic, at best, that he could win the race
2. Even if he managed to win, all he'd get is another 6 years in the minority, and the "opportunity" to be involved in a number of very contentious judical confirmations.
3. Nelson is smarter than Hollings
Evidently some people liked Hollings. The results from 1998:
Hollings - 53% (553,362 votes) vs. Bob Inglis - 46% (483,322 votes)
I've heard that Bill Nelson is going to be the leading contender for the head of NASA job. We may be filling that one with an appointment from Governor Jeb Bush much sooner than 2006.
Hollings.....The true face of the Democrat Party. No principles and racists at their very core!!
That makes a lot of sense..and great strategery. Put Lieberman in DHE, and Harry Reid is ready for a rubber room...
Well, you know, I mean the old f*** no disrespect.
Senator Blowhorn. He won't be missed.
The people who need to be shocked are black people. They have been used and re-sued - again and again and again. Hopefully, some more of them will start to get it.
I wonder what Jesse Hi-Jackson thinks about this.

Hollings morphed himself as a conservative as he neared his election cycles to gain re-election. As weak a candidate as Tenenbaum was this past year, she even made it a tight race against DeMint. Hollings had incumbency, the lemmings of the black population, and tons of government workers who were reliant on his pork pulling. That kind of combination is tough to beat in any state, but especially in SC with the large black vote.
All this is no news. The Democ Rats have been doing this sort of stuff for forty years - plus. They tell minorities that they want to help them and they tell blue colar whites that they will protect their jobs and neighborhoods from (said very quietly) "those moving in".
Because I'm white I got a little different information from the local Democ Rat operative who ran my neighborhood then some of my non-white neighbors. My neighbors seemed to put up with it because they attributed it to the age of the political worker. After all he was only doing the political stuff to keep his job with the city. Plus the guy was pretty suttle.
I think Hollings has lost control of his mouth and is just saying what he always wanted to say. Good - maybe someone should take Tom Dass hole out for a few drinks and find out what he has to say!
heh sh*t rises to the top eventually doesn't it
Wonder what kind of sweetheart deals the RATS made on Long Island. Know what I mean there C?
sc state ping (sorry I don't know who runs the sc ping list)
