Wash. Preschoolers Given Dog Food to Eat

TACOMA, Wash. - A teaching assistant gave some preschoolers dog food to eat during a play-acting exercise at Northeast Tacoma Elementary School. A Tacoma School District spokeswoman said the children spat out the dry dog food and no one suffered any ill effects.

The teaching assistant has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

District spokeswoman Patti Holmgren said it happened Monday in an early education class while the supervisor was out of the room.

When a few of the students pretended to be puppies, getting down on their hands and knees and barking, the assistant attempted to encourage their playacting. She fetched a packet of dry dog food from another room and placed bits on paper plates on the floor.

The dog food came from a display intended to teach the preschoolers what not to eat, Holmgren said.

School Principal Pat Flores learned about the incident Tuesday after a parent complained. In a letter sent Wednesday to parents, Flores called the event "unfortunate."

Holmgren, Flores. Interesting. Was the Teacher's name Patera, Knox or Ericson by chance?

Hello, fellow football fan! I was thinking the same thing.

Interesting that the teacher got the packet of dog food from a display of things children were not to eat. Hey, dummy, the kids were only pretending to be dogs.

I don't think it would hurt the kids. When my now 5 year old son was about a year and a half old I would catch him sneaking food out of the pet's bowls. He later told me he preferred dog food over cat food.

The Democrats will claim that Rossi hasn't even been sworn in and the Republicans are already feeding dogfood to the kids with plans to force it down the mouths of senior citizens . . .

If it doesn't hurt the dogs, why would it hurt humans? Humans are after all, ominvores, while dogs, and cats, are basically omivores, who we force to eat vegetable protein in some cases. Dogs seem to have bit of of ominvore in them sometimes, at least some dogs. I might worry about dog food, even dry, that has been sitting around open for too long. But its out of a fresh sack or can, well it might taste like sh*% but you could live on it.

I remember as a kid we would dare to see how many dog bone treats you could eat. Pretty dry as I recall!

Many a time while hunting my hounds through the night and into the early morning hours, I just had to have a few of the milk bones I kept in my pocket to make it back to the truck. Tasted just fine, when you are that hungry.

Milk Bones mint flavor arent bad with a glass of milk. My boys would give 1 to the dog and 1 for them, never hurt them in the least and their breathe was always minty fresh :)

Tried rover's puppy chow a few times when I was young. Not too bad if you are hungry enough. Couldn't get beyond the smell of the catfood, so I never sampled it.

When the store was out of my dog's usual blend of Purina One , I took home a different mix with salmon as the main ingredient. That was the best smelling dog food I have every come across.

Didn't taste it, though.

I think the pet food marketers are following the lead of fishing lure salespeople. It doesn't have to catch the attention of fish, just fishermen. lol

Seriously, if we made petfood smell like what dogs really enjoyed, it would smell like butt, socks, and underwear.

I use to eat BonZ dog bissquits when i was a kid. I would feed a couple to the dog and keep one for myself they were coated with a beef gravy that was almsot the same flavor as beef jerky
