LAW OF THE LAND Bush backs Ten Commandments Justice Department weighs in on Supreme Court case

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted: December 11, 2004 1:00 a.m. Eastern

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © 2004 WorldNetDaily.com Arguing that religion "has played a defining role" in American history, the Bush administration urged the U.S. Supreme Court to allow Ten Commandments displays in courthouses.

A brief filed by the Justice Department supports two Kentucky counties accused of violating the First Amendment ban on congressional establishment of religion by posting copies of the Ten Commandments.

As WorldNetDaily reported, the Supreme Court will hear arguments early next year and likely will issue a decision in June that will affect displays in public settings across the country.

"Official acknowledgement and recognition of the Ten Commandments' influence on American legal history comport with the Establishment Clause," the administration argued in the brief.

The Kentucky case involves two courthouses in Pulaski and McCreary counties – which displayed the Ten Commandments, the Declaration of Independence, the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights and other historical documents – and Harlan County, where the school board created a similar display.

Currently, four federal circuit courts and one state Supreme Court hold that displays of Ten Commandments are constitutional, while three federal circuit courts have ruled them unconstitutional.

No one has ever adequately explained to me how having the Ten Commandments on display on state or local property constitutes Congress making a law respecting an establishment of religion.

It does not, since the laws themselves are based on the laws defined in the Ten Commandments of God!

Although his efforts did not turn out positive for him nor his position, Judge Moore has begun some deep thinking in America on this subject.

One of the bedrock fundamentals of our laws (10 Commandments) should certainly be able to be in the public square.

I'll third that! Isn't it interesting that President Bush urges the 10 Commandments be allowed to remain in courthouses and in Holland right after Theo VanGogh's murder, a sign that said "Thou Shalt Not Kill" was removed by the government because a Muslim imam complained it was too close to the mosque and was offensive?

Yup, pretty interesting all right....

Praise the Lord for this President! Amen. President Bush knows they are the 10 commandments, not the 10 suggestions. ((OWF))
