VIENNA, Austria - The mysterious illness of Ukrainian opposition leader and presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was caused by dioxin poisoning that was likely intentional, doctors said Saturday.
Yushchenko has accused Ukrainian authorities of trying to poison him in the runup to a presidential vote marred by fraud. Ukraine's Supreme Court voided the outcome of that vote, which Yushchenko lost to Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, and a rerun of the ballot is slated for Dec. 26.
Yushchenko first fell ill in September and was rushed to the Vienna hospital. He resumed campaigning later in the month but with a pockmarked and badly disfigured face.
He returned to the hospital later in September for further treatment and checked in for a third time Friday.
She said she asked him about it and he said: "Don't worry about it" (or something to that effect).
That led me to wonder if he hadn't taken something himself to cause this.
That's what I was thinking. And with his wife's telling remark, I think she unwittingly outed him.
Is that right? Those doctors didn't retract their statements and it was fake?
ukie - I completely believe you that it was a fake press release but I'm wondering if you have a link as I'd like to send it to a freeper who was adament that Yushchenko was not poisoned.
Just because the poison "failed" to kill him doesn't rule out KGB involvement. These things are often very risky and tenuous, and things often go wrong. Even back in the Cold War the KGB didn't always hit its target.
Thank you for your fair question.
I stated in previous threads, but I pretty much get tired of saying it again and again, but here it is in a nut shell.
Yushchenko and Yanushevych are both corrupt politicians, which is par for the course over there. Kuchma and Yanushevych have been in power, and the economy was getting better, there is nothing major going wrong. He supported the US with troops in Iraq, while we have some of our fine European allies putting roadblocks in front of us, instead of supporting us.
Along comes Yanushevych, who, by the way, previously used to be part of the Kuchma government.
Yushchenko is supported by Soros and the EU countries. Yanushevych is supported by Putin. Well, if I have to pick oone, I pick Putin over Soros.
I get really irritated, when some well meaning people swallow the propaganda of Yushchenko being the lily white liberator, trying to liberate Ukraine from evil Russia.
Yushchenko is an opportunist, just like Kerry, that's all he is.
Oh, and BTW, Yushchenko is not supporting the US, he wants to immediately withdraw the Ukraine troops from Iraq.
So, who is better for the US?
And why go to war with Russia, to install an anti-US polititian in Ukraine?
I wonder how they administered it? The old switcheroo with the drink glasses?
And one more thing -- half of the country voted for one guy, half for the other guy, It isn't, as if everyone in Ukraine wants Yushchenko, and evil Russia is trying to foist someone on them, that nobody voted for.
Half of Ukraine actually wants to secede, if Yushchenko gets elected.
With all the fraud going on on BOTH sides, it's impossible tell, who really won the election, but it was a few percentage points either way.
Reading Yushchenko's claims, they don't sound much different, than reading the Dems' claims about the election in the US.
The KGB was incompetent then (as was everything in the USSR), so are their successor agencies incompetent now. They were butchers, but being a butcher doesn't make one clever.
However, they're not complete buffoons. So perhaps the intent may have been merely to incapacitate him or to scare him into not running or to simply make him too ugly for some of the shallow swing voters. Since the KGB, like everyone else in the USSR, was a bureaucracy, the agents behind this may have simply feared killing him (for who knows who would have stepped up to take his place and avenge the martyr) -- bureaucrats tend to half-measures when faced with tough decisions.
That's strange. It only affected his face. The skin on his hands is normal.
It's awful. He was such a handsome man.
"In fish alone, these toxins bioaccumulate up the food chain so that dioxin levels in fish are 100,000 times that of the surrounding environment. "

Using dioxin to try to poison someone is ridiculous, when there are thousands of better methods.
Fish, on the other hand, is full of dioxine.
Yushchenko may have dioxing poisoning, most likely from eating bad fish, and he is using it to try to make accusations against his opponent.

LOL! So true.
