VIENNA, Austria - The mysterious illness of Ukrainian opposition leader and presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was caused by dioxin poisoning that was likely intentional, doctors said Saturday.
Yushchenko has accused Ukrainian authorities of trying to poison him in the runup to a presidential vote marred by fraud. Ukraine's Supreme Court voided the outcome of that vote, which Yushchenko lost to Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, and a rerun of the ballot is slated for Dec. 26.
Yushchenko first fell ill in September and was rushed to the Vienna hospital. He resumed campaigning later in the month but with a pockmarked and badly disfigured face.
He returned to the hospital later in September for further treatment and checked in for a third time Friday.
<< The KGB is not out of service. >>
Not only but also.
Not only not out of service but also -- as the result of a very Ukraine-styled election -- owns operates and controls the Russian "presidency."
> But it does go away eventually, then?
As far as I know, there is no cure. It may go away in a couple of years, or it may persists for 10-20 years with only minor improvement.
I would like to know if the disfigurement is going to go away or is he disfigured for life?
Still clinging to your fantasies, huh?
Do you think the KGB is totally incompentent?
IF they wanted Yushchenko dead, he would be dead.
Yushchenko is now in satisfactory condition and dioxin levels in his liver have returned to normal, Dr. Michael Zimpfer, director of Vienna's private Rudolfinerhaus clinic, said at a news conference.

They've been incompetent before, though it's unusual. Never underestimate the potential for incompetence to screw up even the most foolproof of plans..
A series of tests run over the past 24 hours provided conclusive evidence of the poisoning, Zimpfer said.
"There is no doubt about the fact that Mr. Yushchenko's disease especially following the results of the blood work has been caused by a case of poisoning by dioxin," Zimpfer said.
Unfortunately I am too busy *and* too disorganized to find the article(s) saying that the statement from the clinic/hospital/doctors claiming that there was no evidence of poisoning was false, did not come from the clinic/hospital/doctors at all but from another source, claiming it was from the clinic etc.
I have read every thread and article about this situation; maybe try a search. Apparently (from what else has been posted here) the statement that there was no poisoning was a lie, made to appear as though it was from the clinic, when it was in fact, made by a third party, with the false claim it was from the doctors.
IIRC, there was some kind of threat involved as well.
But what do I know? I'm not one of the doctors!
None that I know of. TCDD and related chemicals act through a genetic mechanism. Within a couple of hours of exposure, you start to see some effects at the cellular level--changes in certain protein levels, up and down regulation of various genes--but it typically takes days or weeks for overt symptoms to appear. Because it's acting through modification of gene expression, and not through direct action on some target (like carbon monoxide acts on the hemoglobin in red blood cells), it does not act quickly.
PS. If I had to venture a guess, this wasn't FSB work but more likely the Sluzhba Bespeky Ukrayiny - Ukraine's intelligence service. Possibly a freelancer hired by 'private' interests, perhaps of Russian allegiance..
Oh, how awful. That poor man.
That is so very sad. How are the Ukrainians receiving this?
Do a search on dioxin.
It's all over in the food supply, including and especially in fish.
If an intelligence service wanted to poison him, they would use something effective.
Yup. Russell Bliss was ahead of his time.
Birth deformities in that part of the world are like one of those sick circuses.
Weirdest poisoning case I've ever heard of.
Arsenic works slowly too, with more deleterious and dramatic effects.
