Massachusetts gays divorcing

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Less than seven months after same-sex couples began tying the knot in Massachusetts, the state is seeing its first gay divorces.

Newlyweds seeking to renounce the vows they so recently took have been trickling into probate courts across the state, filling out obsolete forms that still read "husband" and "wife."

Josh Friedes, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Freedom to Marry Coalition, said the rapid divorces are no cause for concern.

"It would be wonderful if every marriage lasted until a couple lived to a ripe old age, but unfortunately we know from our heterosexual peers that all too often there are irrconcilable differences, and for these couples, divorce is often the most humane option," Friedes said. "Anyone who argues that gay and lesbian couples divorcing is grounds for opposing gay marriage is being incredibly hypocritical."

The first gay divorce case in Suffolk County, which includes Boston, was filed Wednesday by a male couple who exchanged vows on May 22, five days after same-sex marriage was legalized.

One partner was a 33-year-old religious educator from Boston, the other a 39-year-old professor based in Washington. Since then, the couple said in their divorce filing, "our interests have grown in different directions." Each man signed a settlement attesting that the marriage had "irretrievably broken down."

The most difficult part of the settlement appeared to be custody of their three cats, who will live exclusively with the professor.

But "in recognition of the emotional hardship of such relinquishment," the settlement reads, the professor agreed to provide his ex "with periodic updates, photographs, and any health-related information pertaining" to the cats.

I added "cats" and "kitties" to the keywords.

Where are the animal rights activists when we need them? ;-)

The "wife," of course.

"...but unfortunately we know from our heterosexual peers that all too often there are irrconcilable differences, and for these couples, divorce is often the most humane option..."

sometimes I wonder why on earth I've ever gotten pissed off or defensive (at times, not always...) when I confront a socialist in debate. I'm sure it's because I have a genuine dislike and contempt for these anti-Americans.

having said that, the above "defense-that-is-turned-into-a-critique-of-tradition/conservative" is classic mantra, and humorously ironic - they stand against what we stand for, seek to radicalize/disrupt our culture, and when they make fucking fools of themselves they always come back to the same old "you do it, too!" charade.

And these cowards are what have us conservatives worried???

They have one here in Buffalo, NY. I worked with two gays and one would enjoy making us sick in the break room with his "tails" of his weekend "trysts" in the bathhouse. I learned to take a later lunch real quick.

How could I have been so heartless?

For shame! (I'd follow up with a wink, but given the nature of this story, it might be misinterpreted as a come on, LOL!)

Well, they could just think of it as "top" and "bottom".

not on these short term marriages. Now if these homosexuals had adopted children THEN there would be legal fees of adoption, and then child support, and then visitation.

Short term marriages of less than a year can and do get dealt with via form work. Lawyers are only required if the parties are devoid of any ability to communicate.

since it's not really marriage, it's not a til-death-do-you-part proposition.

it's a freak show, is what it is.

I've contended all along that the real reason the Rats pushed gay marriage is it will mean more work for their lawyer constituents.
