COLUMBUS, Ohio A man walked onstage in a crowded nightclub during a rock concert Wednesday night and opened fire, killing at least four people and wounding at least two others before he was shot to death by police, authorities said.
Members of the heavy metal band Damageplan (search) had just begun their first song at the Alrosa Villa (search) when the man opened fire on the band, initially shooting the guitarist, who went by the name "Dimebag Darrell," a witness said. According to the band's Web site, the guitarist and another member, drummer Vinnie Paul, are formerly of the heavy metal band Pantera (search).
The witness, 22-year-old Chris Couch, said he was standing about 30 feet away from the stage when he noticed a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and hockey jersey walk up to the stage, followed by a bouncer and another club employee.
The man in the jersey climbed onto the stage, started yelling and shot the guitarist five or six times at close range, Couch said. Couch said the gunman also shot a bouncer who pulled him off the musician.
Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull said a police officer shot and killed the gunman. It wasn't immediately clear whether the officer was already at the show or had responded to an emergency call. Authorities didn't immediately provide the identities of the victims.

At Least 5 Dead, 2 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting (Including "Dimebag Darrell" (formerly of Pantera.
5 now man oh man....
RIP
RIP Dimebag Darrel. Pantera was very popular when I was in high school.
Prayers for the four other victims and their families in this shooting.
Prayer BUMP.
Maybe it would be appropriate to turn this thread into the prayer bump list (not because there was a "celebrity" involved but because 7 and maybe more people were gunned down at a club tonight).
Good idea for a prayer ping, weegee. This is a tragic night, on the 24th anniversary of John Lennon's murder. Columbus is what I consider to be my hometown. I grew up less than 3 miles from the club in what used to be a nice area.
wow.....
see what happens when you deploy from Columbus to Iraq? all heck breaks loose....
I recall reading that you planned to live in Columbus, not sure if you're from there, but this is an aberration, an extremely unusual event.
I visited there in May of this year, and my only complaints were the smog, the humidity and they had closed a favorite Italian restaurant of mine from childhood. Other than that, it was lovely.
I have lived on the eastside (Pataskala) since 1997....
I love it there. Besides I am an Ohio State fan.
I dont know where I am going to be living when I get home from here yet. Which sucks, but hopefully things will turn my way.
Columbus, compared to when I lived in NYC in the early 80's, is extremely quiet...
Can you tell me, is the club near OSU or is it elsewhere?
I haven't been to Columbus since around 1999. Before that it would be the mid 1980s.
I thought this guy used to play for Pantera, too.
This really sucks....I was a big Pantera fan until they broke up last year. I even had the pleasure of seeing Dimebag and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, perform live on 4 occasions with Pantera back in the 1990s. Does anyone know if Vinnie Paul is okay? VP is the drummer for Damageplan, and another band member is listed as among those killed. My prayers go out to everyone affected by this crime.
From campus, you would go from N. High St. to Hudson and then get on the 71 North about 3 miles to Sinclair Road, to Morse Road West to Sinclair Rd. North again, and there's the club.
According to relatives still in the area, if you're planning on having kids or if you already have them, it's best to stay out of Columbus Public School District. I have friends who swear by Dublin but other friends who claim that Dublin has gone downhill. You'll find out soon enough! :)
if you can go to Dublin Coffman or Scioto, you are ok...but Dublin Central is practically a northern extention of columbus city schools...
My wife and I were thinking Columbus Academy ourselves....
I'm not familiar with Columbus Academy but if it's private it's probably good. My friends in Columbus have their kids enrolled in Catholic schools. A relative has just moved outside of Columbus simply to escape the public school system, and I don't recall which area they are building in.
On another thread, there is an unofficial report that Vinnie Paul is okay. There is speculation about who the other band member is who was killed.
