At Least 3 Dead, 4 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting Witnesses: Alleged Gunman Went Onto Stage, Fired Shots

POSTED: 10:32 pm EST December 8, 2004 UPDATED: 11:36 pm EST December 8, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least three people died and four others were wounded after a shooting at a Columbus nightclub on Wednesday night, NBC 4 reported.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road.

Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported.

Shortly after the band began playing its first song, a man reportedly ran onto the stage and began shooting, according to a witness who identified himself as Sean. Some members of the audience reportedly thought the man running onto the stage with a gun was part of the band's act, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.

Witnesses said that several shots were fired at the band. Witnesses said that a bouncer at the club tackled the alleged gunman before that person was shot and killed. It was unclear as to whom shot the alleged gunman.

Alrosa Villa is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.

According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.

Damageplan featured former Pantera artists Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The pair were joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.

Thanks for the explanation, Stew. Two other people had also tried explaining it to me. Now I get it. :)

On the whole outside of Mosh Pits I don't think it occurred that often. But as a Radio Producer on one of the local stations here(who knew Darrell somewhat) said that when you pack a bunch of strangers into a room, add a few that are drunk of high. Then some violence is bound to happen. That doesn't make it the bands fault, just irresponsible fans.

I don't think it is the bands fault at all, but I have been to several hundreds of different concerts of the same type (Thrash, Death, Hardcore)where thre is drugs and alcohol and I have NEVER seen anything like the crowd that night. And I'm usually in the mosh pit.

Horror shock? I guess you could call it that. His big hit was "Fire", I believe it was number one around 1967. I remember seeing him on I think Dick Cavett, he came out with some kind of ern on his head and in it a very large fire that burned throughout the song. He was a one hit wonder in the States but bigger in the UK, his home. His organist was Vincent Crane who went on to form Atomic Rooster, an early '70s metal band of some note. Vincent killed himself I think in 87. It's amazing the stuff you can find on the web.

btw, I'm looking for some early Alice videos, with the original band. I've heard about Prime Cuts but I hear the early footage is pretty fragmented. Know of any?

Well then you would be a better judge than I. I was in Junior High/High School during the hieght and fall of popularity of Heavy Metal. So I only got to a few concerts of any Metal groups. Grunge had taken over by the time I was graduating from High School. So my music taste had changed some. Was the concert worse than the GnR concert were the fans rioted due to the band being late?

My kind of girl! I play all my old stuff around the house all the time and my wife just can't get into it. My kids (daughter, 3; son, 5) are all into it though.

Man, I feel old.

I can sympathize, hubby likes some hard rock, but not very often. It says it makes him edgy. Of course, he was a mod in HS. *shivers at the memory*

Probably not, the floors weren't ripped up, but chairs were flying, people were getting punched for no reason, fires got started. This was mostly people who were in seats all wanted to be in the pit and dam the security.

"They've been giving their best to the music for decades. That's what makes this shooting so tragic, that one sh**head with a attitude problem can eradicate someone's life and career just like (snap) that."

I don't know if this has been posted, but a friend of mine said the audio from a DVD documentary they were filming for the show, and said the shooter yelled something about DD being responsible for Pantera breaking up before shooting.

I don't know if this has been posted,

Late to the thread myself (long day) but just heard at a local range that the cop used a shotgun, had the sense to rack a 00 buck OUT of the gun and caught the badguy in the base of the neck with a slug.

If true, it would have sure ended it quick.

Dime Bag, was a good friend to my son, Dime would always babysit the kids, he was a fine man. My son was so upset he didn't get to sleep until 6am.

The kids in my son's band are working up a tribute song for Dime in the other room now. About how he listened, cared, shared his home and his time, and was there for them.

Again, my perspective is from the business owner, we all know laws that prohibit, often do not prevent, but it makes sense for the bar owner to remind his patrons that weapons are not allowed, just to limit his liability. More club owners will now be fitting out their clubs with metal detectors. This Idea has been raised on several other threads to the upset of many a freeper, who think their right to be armed trumps a private property owners right to keep armed people off his property.

If your son is jamming with his band in your house right now, you are a very cool mom. Band mom's are the best.
