At Least 3 Dead, 4 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting Witnesses: Alleged Gunman Went Onto Stage, Fired Shots
POSTED: 10:32 pm EST December 8, 2004 UPDATED: 11:36 pm EST December 8, 2004
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least three people died and four others were wounded after a shooting at a Columbus nightclub on Wednesday night, NBC 4 reported.
The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road.
Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported.
Shortly after the band began playing its first song, a man reportedly ran onto the stage and began shooting, according to a witness who identified himself as Sean. Some members of the audience reportedly thought the man running onto the stage with a gun was part of the band's act, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.
Witnesses said that several shots were fired at the band. Witnesses said that a bouncer at the club tackled the alleged gunman before that person was shot and killed. It was unclear as to whom shot the alleged gunman.
Alrosa Villa is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.
According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.
Damageplan featured former Pantera artists Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The pair were joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.
On that note, I'm going to bed :~\
It is cynicism. Pure unadulterated postmodern cynicism.
"Oh that's just a joke, she doesn't REALLY believe that the Holocaust never happened."
"What would I do if 3,000 Americans were murdered on a bright and shiny Monday morning?"
"Can't trust a political ad, all politicians are liars and those Subway sandwich diets don't work either."
I honestly don't know.
There is a fascinating book out called "The Gift of Fear" by a security expert named Gavin de Becker - it's about listening to your instincts, and how we often override them because of conditioning from society (reluctance to offend others, feeling foolish, not wanting to be thought of as rude, etc.) - which in a way is what we all did, I guess, by explaining it away. I think I was lucky that time.
Blabbermouth (fairly reliable metal site) is reporting that Vinnie is fine.
From the site:
Columbus, Ohio radio station The Blitz 99.7 FM has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET that DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul was uninjured in the shooting incident at a Columbus nightclub which resulted in the death of Paul's brother, Dimebag Darrell. According to Scoop, who attended the concert and briefly saw Vinnie following the incident, Paul was in a complete state of shock and expressed his desire to be with his brother right after the shooting occurred.

LOL - I realize that now. That happened to be my first trip to The Big Apple. : ) (Errr...nice story about Houston...yikes!)
I used to work in the University District in Seattle, and one day a man came into the store and asked me a question...I couldn't quite hear him, so I leaned closer and said, "Pardon me, could you repeat the question?"
He leaned in very close to my face and repeated it, and this time I heard every word, which I will never forget: "My ancestors killed Abraham Lincoln. It haunts me still. Do you know where I can get a bucket of chicken?"
I'm not good quickly identifying people with emotional problems, apparently. ; )
(I pointed him to a Subway sandwich shop across the street, and he left.)
Thank you for that. It's a relief, but I guess that means it's one of the other guys, and that is heartbreaking as well.
:-P
Agreed. It is heartbreaking.
"Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan, was one of at least four people fatally wounded during a bizarre shooting at a concert in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday night.
According to Columbus NBC affiliate NBC4, Dimebag
real name Darrell Abbott was among the fatalities resulting from the incident, which occurred during a Damageplan performance at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus. Authorities did not release the names of any of the other fatalities to NBC4. Columbus police told MTV News that the gunman killed four people and wounded two before being shot and killed by a police officer.
One witness told the NBC affiliate that a man jumped onto the stage during the first song of the band's set and began firing a gun. According to the witness, the man fired several shots at the band before being tackled by club security. One of the survivors is in critical condition at a local hospital, while another is in fair condition.
"A Columbus police officer, when he arrived, engaged the shooter, and the shooter is also dead, and if the officer hadn't acted when he did and how he did, we'd probably be looking at more dead, because this guy was actively shooting," Sergeant Brent Mull, a public information officer, told MTV News.
"We have 200-plus patrons that we have sequestered inside three city buses," Sergeant Mull explained. "We are interviewing them one by one. The ones that were inside and witnessed this ran for their lives and were in fear for their lives. They are victims too, and we want to take care of them..." (End excerpt. Link to story follows)

Dimebag Darrell, Three Others Killed In Bizarre Ohio Concert Shooting 12.09.2004 2:10 AM EST
Right. Best to let the perp just keep on shooting people. Wouldn't want anyone in the crowd to stop him.
I told him I was an engineering student and didn't have time for pleasure. He laughed, the spell was broken, he could BS me no more and I moved on to join my friends up the way.
So does the drummer. This is no Spinal Tap.
I don't understand all of the Q&A for the patrons unless the cops are trying to make a case against the club/venue.
The perp is dead (although SOME press called him the "alleged" gunman).
There is no murder mystery to solve or murder charge to prosecute.
There IS a wrongful death because the perp entered with a gun. Almost no bars screen for metal at the doors.
You don't want to go there.
Name the last two rock stars who have been involved in incidents in which people were killed, or at least, there was intent to kill. At this moment, I can only think of two: John Lennon, shot to death twenty-four years ago tonight, and the two from Damageplan hours ago.
On the other hand, from the world of rap, we have the assassinations of the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur for starters. Shakur was shot in a studio years before. P. Diddy/Puff Daddy/Sean John/P. Sukrap attacked a rival record executive with a champagne bottle. Combs and Shyne were involved in a shooting for which the latter is still in prison. Pre-stardom, Snoop Dogg was charged with murder, being at the scene of a drive-by shooting that killed a rival gangbanger. We have the knife attack from Lil Wayne at the VIBE awards. We have prison thug Marion "Suge" Knight of Death Row Records, who allegedly shoved Vanilla Ice over a balcony and threatened to drop him to his death. And John Kerry's favorite rapper, Eminem, brought a gun into a nightclub to confront the guy he thought was banging his wife.
Rock and roll largely celebrates rebellion, but not necessarily violence. Although the industry standard has somewhat shifted from gangsta rap to pimp-ho-bling-bling schtuff, Hardcore rap not only celebrated violence as it gained popularity, it was an active participant in it.
The police have to take into consideration a witness's perspective from:
In any event, that's just my best guess.
Certainly the crowd at Woodstock '99 was not well behaved (although I would be hard pressed to say that they were any worse than the people at the other Woodstocks of the Isle of Wight festivals; you do realize that they burned down the booths in 1969 too).
I've seen smaller shows at clubs where rock bands got into brawls (bloody fights) and seperate fights where people were stabbed or went to the hospital (in some rare incidents people died locally).
Update from an apparently reliable source (by brother knows him) from the damageplanet.com boards:
I've known them for 16 years. He wasn't just a guitarist, he was a friend. One of the nicest people I've met. Here is what I have been able to ascertain. Realize I could be wrong on some of this, but most of it is gospel.
1) Daryl is dead. We all know this.
2) Vinnie is fine (I have confirmed this)
3) A bassist from the opening band tried to shield Daryl and was shot. I do not know his condition, but I imagine critical.
4) Fans were shot
5) The other member dead is believed to be Pat Lachman. This has not been confirmed, but I have this on very good sources, but it is VERY late for any of us who know anyone to get any info.
6) Dime was taken to Riverside Hospital (DON'T CALL THERE!)
7) A bouncer was shot in the shoulder.
8) Someone was shot in the thigh, I believe this to be the bassist involved, but at point blank range, this may be critical.
9) Three are dead (at this writing) one being the shooter. One is Daryl, I am nearly 95% sure the other is Pat.
10) The shooter shot at Vince, but he crawled away on the floor and hit the deck (and you would too so no bullshit posts)
11) The death toll is now at 5
12) FOr those of you arguing about stupid ####, it was a UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICER who snuck in the back and shot the gunman. The cops received the call at 10:18
13) Mitch was working. He is okay.
14) A Hammer Strength Sec guard was shot
15) The other confirmed dead is a security guard (not the above)
16) There are now 5 confirmed dead.
This is all I know, and all anyone will probably know until morning. Peace be with you all.
My email is below, but don't email me unless it's important.
Thanks
