I give up. Yes this could be a breach of contract, specially because there was obvious consideration. I'll grant all of that. They have a right to be mad. But that's not my point...oh, who cares.

Waaah, maybe the guys at VMI thought they were going to get an education in a single-sex enviroment too.

The women who enrolled at Wells College under the assumption that they would enjoy a same-sex educational environment are getting the shaft.

If you bothered to read the article, you would have saved yourself a moot comment.

Administrators don't want to admit men until the current freshman class graduates in 2008....

It will be a sad day when noone has the ability to choose a single gender college.

Name one "single-gender" college for males.

What about the hypocrisy of those who defend single sex male colleges, but won't do the same for single sex female colleges?

Because there aren't any single sex male colleges left. None.

Unless you want to go to a Madrassa in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan.

Actually, men breaking into an all female school seems the more perplexing.

I'm a woman in a male-dominated field (I'm a software engineer) so I understand what drives women to compete in places they "don't belong".

But when men break out of their assigned roles (to become, for example, cheerleaders, flight attendants, nurses, housekeepers, or elementary school teachers) other, "manlier" men, often question their sexuality or worse.

Sure... you can "get the chicks" if you're in those fields... but it just targets you for abuse. I don't get it.

They also said they don't have to wear make-up or do their hair.

I don't think a lawsuit will work or is necessarily the right tactic but I can understand feeling hoodwinked if the distinguishing feature of the institution I applied to and have been attending is changed midstream (and, yes, I know this happened at the Citadel and I feel sorry for the men it happened to, for the same reason. But a publicly funded institution is held to different governmental standards, rightly or wrongly.)

As I posted when another article on this subject was posted several weeks ago, I can understand the viewpoint of the women at Wells and I don't think their valid point of view should be mocked. They specifically applied to a women-only college because they wanted that experience. There are still several all-male colleges in existence also and I think there's a place for private single-sex colleges. Unfortunately, if the market can't support them they'll do what Wells is doing and nothing can stop it. But I understand the distress of people who are halfway through their education there. I think waiting 2 years or so and letting the current students graduate before implementing a drastic change like this would make more sense. Incoming students would know ahead of time what kind of school they are applying to.

Actually someone listed three on a thread about this a few days ago. But I don't have time to research it at the moment. I think the men should have single sex colleges also and I'm a woman.

Couldn't have been named after the coffee place, but possibly Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica?

Starbuck is a Capt Ahab's First Mate in Moby Dick which came out long before coffee shops or TV shows.

Way back when I went to college, the college catalog of available courses that contained the curriculum for specific majors and which was in effect at the time a person declared a major, was considered a "contract" between the student and the school. Purportedly, it meant that the school could not add or change requirements to that person's future schedule for classes. Of course, the school always did, but in my experience, it was done without much hassle for the student. Others certainly might have different experiences and horror stories to tell. I suspect this "contract" might be what these girls are referring to, but I do not see how they can make this claim stick.

I once worked for an all women's college in Kentucky. It had originally been a school for orphaned young girls in the 1800s. It morphed into a two year college and then a four year school. Their nursing graduates were as sharp and as well trained as any in the country. The school began to permit male students in one of their off campus night programs (30 miles distant). This was viewed by the administration as a "revenue enhancer". I do not think the college has yet permitted males to enroll on the main campus.

Betcha an adminstrative head or two rolls over this and the "new policy" is repealed.

Bet.

Not to mention that the pay and prestige is usually lower for "traditional" female jobs.

There has to be a good screen shot from Animal House for this thread.

Hillary went to Wellesley College where her valedictorian speech is sealed. My daughter went to an Explo camp there. she said she has no intention of ever setting foot on that campus again.
