WBZ'S David Brudnoy is saying good-bye to his friends. After living with AIDS for years, Davids cancer, merckle cell carcinoma has spread to his liver and kidneys and his prognosis at Mass General Hospital is not good.
All too often in the news business, its not good news we have to report and this is one of those stories. WBZ's Gary LaPierre had an extended conversation today with a very prominent member of our family here at WBZ, Dr. David Brudnoy.
David Brudnoy asked to have this conversation so that he, a nationally prominent radio talk show host, could say farewell to you... his listening public, his family.
Simply put and to the point, David Brudnoy is looking death straight in the eye today and is saying to his family... his listeners, Im ready. It was very apparent when I stepped into Davids room at the Mass General today that one of the giant survivors of this sometimes very unforgiving business is talking to his family thats you... for the last time.
10-years ago I talked to David, a mere skeleton of a man, fighting back from death by full-blown AIDS. This tough guy won.
A little more than a year ago, a deathbed struggle ensues again for David Brudnoy, merkel-cell carcinoma. He launched another 15 round battle with a rare deadly disease and won... until now. David told us today, he's losing this one. I asked him how its different this time.
David "it's gone below the waist. Its in the liver and kidneys."
While at times, struggling a bit for the breath to speak, David Brudnoy is always, the open book and I couldn't help by ask why, while standing at deaths door he wants to share it all.
David You go through a couple of days of that more pain pointless. No end.
Gary: What you are saying to continue would be just to continue your being for a few more days?
David: With morphine and a little oxygen and food. I am not starving myself. I am not asking my doctors to do anything illegal. I wish I could but they won't. I will make it through. My head is completely excepting of this. I am absolutely ready.
David Brudnoy, as only David could do it, gets the chance to say his final farewells to the world.
David: I think we in the media often times want everybody else to be frank about themselves but want to be covert about ourselves. My life is truly an open book.
Gary: It always has been.
David: It has been but more so as I contend with these diseases.
So tonight, he'll be heard in a bed-side interview with WBZ's Gary LaPierre in what will be his final farewell.
All of us here at WBZ have David Brudnoy in our thoughts and prayers today.
To those who cry "Die already" and "he gets what he deserves", I am truly impressed by how Christ-like you are. I am pretty sure that Jesus might do you one better and spit on Mr. Brudnoy or smother him with a pillow on his deathbed. In fact, I do believe that there is a passage in the Bible which states: "It's OK to beat queers to death; they're not human being's anyway." Wow, I hope youre not around on my deathbed if I get lung cancer from my misspent youth smoking cigarettes. Will you blame and say it was my entire fault? Is the concept of compassion beyond you?
These homosexuals, I believe, had something terrible happen to them and this acting out is the result of it. Even if you despise what they do, you have to love them as people. Hate the sin, love the sinner. It takes a bigger person to love those who you disagree with than with one you agree. Remember Jesus came for the lowly, not for the mighty. His followers were prostitutes, tax collectors and in the case of Paul, a soldier who persecuted the Christians. As long as the mustard seed finds fertile soil, the plant can go. When you turn people away because they are not as enlightened as you are, you are acting like a Pharisee.
I have listened to Mr. Brudnoy since he started broadcasting on WBZ. He is an erudite man who is level headed and well reasoned with common sense. He is the anti-poster boy for the homosexual agenda. From everything I have ever heard, he rejects the gay movement with every fiber of his being. A large portion of you have condemned him without hearing him speak. You do not know the man; you know only an aspect of him yet, you condemn him freely. You are just as bad as any liberal who condemns someone for being conservative.
You have eyes, but you do not see. You have ears, but you do not ear. You have brain, but do not think.
Go in Christ. Flame away.
Wow, nostalgia. I used to listen to Larry Glick back when I was in high school, I believe a few years before he retired or left WBZ or whatever. I remember the classic comedy sketches he used to play, the shotgun sound he used to hang up on people, and those calls he made to phone booths to see who would pick up.
But I cannot for the life of me remember what it was you had to do to earn one of the Glick Univeristy T-shirts. Can you refresh my memory?
On-topic: I remember hearing Brudnoy a few times back in the 80s, especially in the winter when sundown was earlier and BZ could be picked up sooner in the day up here. He was on in the late afternoon, as I recall, then there was another conservative guy on in the early evening (whose name I forget at the moment), then Glick had the 9-1 slot. It wasn't until a few years later and Brudnoy had a more convenient evening slot that I was really able to appreciate him. He was, and is, one of the most articulate and reasonable radio talkers I've ever heard. Pity someone of obvious intelligence would become a victim of his own lapse in judgment.
He was outed 10 years ago along with the news that he had HIV. An arrangement was made with the Boston Globe to break the story.
>>He was an avowed atheist.
From what I've heard he was an agnostic. One who doesn't know whether there's a God but he is about to find out
one way or the other.
He asked people to pray for him-- "i don't know if anyone is receiving the prayers but it wouldn't hurt"
Sorry to hear this MamaB.
"a man who contracted AIDS by his own wilful and deliberate sin is not a hero."
Notice these words of YOURS. NOT MINE. Stop accusing me of being dishonest. You have zero ability to argue a point so why not just give it up?
Why don't you do yourself a favor and look up the words grace and mercy in the dictionary and do yourself some good for a change. Or, if you can't manage that, at least do us a favor and can your useless blather altogether.
You come across as deeply bitter and self righteous, traits better-suited to the average DUer. Go spew some bitterness over there if you're so inclined.
How very sad. We had the pleasure of hearing his show, especially on our drives to visit relatives in the Boston area. His presence will be sorely missed. My prayers go out to him and his family.
He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. He kept that little fact to himself until 1994. How many partners did he share his disease with during those six long years ?
Principled and courageous does not apply.
Well said, 3 words that sum up his personality.
"You're the one who said sinners can't be heroes, not me... "
You have just proven my point. I expect no less from those who propagate the homosexual agenda. Why would I expect any less from one of their fans ?
Being an atheist the poor person has nothing to look forward to but an agonizing death.
''I've said innumerable prayers within [the Catholic] tradition and other traditions," he said. ''I think whatever happens I will be able to contend with it."
I don't think you know what you are talking about.
They both died of AIDs and both practiced their sexual proclivities with others..
Unless there is a deathbed conversion they'll both be together for eternity.
Dying as a result of one's filthy sexual activity and in an unrepentent state is hardly "something."
I'd rather die of old age, in combat, being run over by a hay bailer, struck down by a Greyhound, but to die of this self-inflicted disease is the tragedy here.
Within the Catholic tradition he should have said, "O my God I am heartily sorry for having offended thee...." during, of after, having received absolution.
I hope David finds God soon.
Quote from Brudnoy in today's Boston Herald"
"I'm beginning to admit the possibility that God does exist.
Actually , I do believe He does exist.
He was then asked what God would say to him when arrives at heaven's door?
"Oh, God will see me and say, "You're Late."
