House Democrats Reject Calls for Annan's Resignation

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some House Democrats are coming to the defense of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan after several Republican lawmakers called for his resignation because of allegations of corruption in the organization's oil-for-food program. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, sent a letter Wednesday to Secretary of State Colin Powell, saying criticism of Annan is "disgraceful and premature."

"There has been no hint of impropriety on the part of the secretary-general, who on numerous occasions has proven his honesty and integrity," the letter said.

It was signed by 19 Democrats and independent Rep. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

On Monday, Democratic Reps. John Conyers of Michigan and Donald Payne of New Jersey sent a letter to House colleagues in support of Annan.

"To decide that the secretary-general must resign is an absolutely premature conclusion to draw when there is no evidence or even allegations that the secretary-general profited from the oil-for-food program," they said.

The program allowed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to sell oil and use the proceeds to buy food, medical supplies and other humanitarian items. Congressional committees are investigating allegations that Saddam manipulated the program to generate illicit income and win influence with foreign officials.

Typical Dimocrats - don't hold anyone in charge responsible for the actions of their organization. I wonder if they even believe that Oil for Food happened?

This will come back to bite them very soon.

Funny, Bush is responsible for the lowest grunt in Abu Ghraib, but Kofi is not responsible for his direct underlings.

Strange logic there.

I figure they would want him to go so they can anoint Bill Clinton as the next Secretary General.

Why does the extreme left support the UN and its corruption?

You would think they would be even more outraged about the institution's failure to meet its humanitarian goals.

"House Communists Reject Calls for Annan's Resignation" would be a more truthful headline.

This is actually a good thing. Annan is at best an incompetent and at worst a crook. Having him as its figure head can only harm the UN and keep the Food-For-Oil scandal in the forefront. The Dems don’t realize it, but Annan staying on only harms the UN – and this is a very good thing.

Thank you Democrats.

Liberals are so predictable......that ultimately works to their disadvantage, yet they are too stupid to realize it.

"There has been no hint of impropriety on the part of the secretary-general, who on numerous occasions has proven his honesty and integrity," the letter said.

Democrats motto: Hear no evil, see no evil, believe there is no evil, UNLESS, it has conservative values to it.
