WASHINGTON — Congress on Tuesday was wrapping up work on an intelligence reform bill that skirted the issue of whether states should issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants (search), but outside the Capital Beltway, neither side is backing down.
Opponents of allowing illegals to obtain licenses say the issue is clearly one of security — a driver's license is a ticket to move freely around the country, and by offering the illusion of legal citizenship, it would allow terrorists to lay low and build networks until it's time to attack.
"It is common sense we need to control that," said California Republican state Rep. Mark Wyland. "The problem is there are those who want to be politically correct, or have an agenda and they are the ones who are pushing this. This is a crucial national security issue and fiscal issue for this country."

I don't know what he knows that makes him do what he does, but the people of this country need to prevent illegals and terrorists from getting driver's licenses.

Drivers licenses have been a state govt. function for years.

President Bush want to make illegal aliens legal workers. When they are legal workers they will need licenses to get to work.

As Sensenbrenner and Tancredo found out today, 336 Republicans and rats in the House do not equate illegals and terrorists. Unless they can convince the American people that illegals=terrorism they have no hope of winning with that argument.

And if I could ask what's your "program". Is it total deportation, or a guest worker program(even Tancredo has proposed such a program).

The difference is that Tancredo's is a genuine guest-worker program, not a ploy to legalize a few million illegal aliens.
It's actually the right approach, as Tancredo's plan would be combined with enhanced enforcement against illegal aliens and their employers, giving them both a positive and a negative incentive to return home and get in line for a guest-worker program. If Bush would compromise on legalizing illegals, he would avoid what is otherwise going to be a brutal fight.
I think it is racism for our legislators to try and get almost only illegal Mexicans here. What about all those from around the world who ave been waiting to come here legally? It is racism to be making Mexicans first or a special case.
I think you start the round ups again and deport illegals from anywhere they are found.
Being 95% in California and other southern states are all Mexican, I don't think it is racism to be mostly looking for them.
No access should be allowed to any social system and if the Constitution needs to change so illegals can't have access to free education at a cost of billions a year, then so be it.
Mostly unrestricted round ups would be a great start because the word spreads and they will stop coming here as much and they would have to be out of site, instead of confident looking for work.
Instead of emailing 336 Congressmen who supported 10,000 extra border patrol, port security, and streamlining information gathering, perhaps it would be smarter to ask the 75 who voted against it why they were willing to stall measures to stop terrorists just so they could prevent Jose from getting to his burger-flipping job on time?

The issue of illegal immigration has the interests of many different voting factions of strength, and they don't agree on what should be done. The right block includes constitutionalist, nationalists, and isolationists. They want illegals removed because the very presence of illegals offends their sense of law. An opposing faction is employers who want cheap and reliable labor. Yet another voting block are ideologically independent moderates. These are voters who shop at Walmart. If you ask them if they are in favor of cracking down on illegal immigration they will reply yes but they hear only the word "illegal." The will say it's not "fair" that illegals are here without knowing a thing about the red tape, paperwork, waiting, and likely denial that faces those who try to enter legally. The independents support is wide spread, but as thin as the wind. They will be very angry when a Big Mac costs 4$ and woe to the politician who misreads their support. Another factor is the Latino community. They have tended to distrust Republicans who promise to end the flow of immigration to the US. I believe these voters responded to prop 187 and are responsible for the anemic Republican party in CA. The fact that rats are pushing amnesty and Dubya is pushing work permits indicates that elected officials in both partys think their election chances decrease by tightening the border. When the left and the middle want something even the right must consider if standing on principle is worth electing lots of rats who will pass the "2006 open border bill." Best I can tell the champions of border control are men whose sphere of influence reaches only as far as a US Congressional district.
All of these factors must be considered. Dubya seems to genuinely want a discussion on illegal immigration. That is why he is pushing work permits. I will be happy when the discussion comes because, when an accounting is done the anti-illegal immigration forces will not be nearly the boogieman that Latino Bush voters think. I trust Dubya to do what he thinks is best for America and he is in the best position to know what is best.

Huh where did the President state that these illegals would be "legalised". It is a guest worker program and it seems that the Prersident and Tancredo are on the same page.
