In brief letters to Bush, Berry and Reynoso said they believed they still had more time to serve but it wasn't worth the fight.

In other words, Bush made it clear the US Marshals were coming to arrest them, so it was time to make a melodramatic statement and then bug out. ;)

Exactly. She was oly ever a temporary appointee, but given the nastiness of the 2000 election, which SHE helped perpetuate even though HER OWN OFFICE found no evidence of wrongdoing, she sort of won the first "I have more time left to serve" fight.

This time is different. Mandates are wonderful things.
