From what I can tell, Christian rock in the 1970's was kind of a lame imitation of secular rock. Now, Christian rock has emerged as a powerful creative force that is in many ways setting the agenda, not just parroting someone else's ideas in a "Christian" way . . .
Of course, Christian artists borrow some themes and ideas from other contemporary music genres, just like the Wesley brothers did when they were writing their hymns in the 1700's, but God (the one who invented creativity) is inspiring some really powerful stuff in the Christian music world . . .
It's cool with me if your church likes to do classical music, as long as you don't mind if my church likes to rock!
I love well-executed classical music, and certainly don't mind sitting through it at church - but what stirs me, and seems to speak to me, is the music I identify with (which for me is R&B). Maybe the difference between me and some other people is that as long as it's well-executed, I am happy to hear anything in church, knowing that it's ministering to someone. Maybe it's not me that time...but maybe next time it will be. Whatever is done well and glorifies the Lord is a good thing, imo.
There's a hot Tex Mex country bad called "Los Lonely Boys" that's getting airplay and time on national TV shows, with their song "How Far is Heaven". Also heard the song on my local Christian station, so I'd assume this is a case of Christian music with a positive theme crossing over into the mainstream. I'm all for it; people are lost and need to hear inspirational themes.
