I love Switchfoot. Very good band.

I have to say I don't really share your concern. Reaching people for Christ takes on many different forms. There are people who still think an organ and a seventy-two year-old soprano are the only legitimate forms of worship music - but you'll never reach a kid with that stuff.

If young people can get the message that becoming a Christian doesn't instantly turn you into someone very uncool, that's a good thing, imo.

I'll amen that .. and add that it did a WHOLE lot toward leading me into more Christ-centered Christian music as I hungered for "my" kind of music with a Christian message.

I am all for Christian rock and worship and I believe it can be a catalyst to Christ for young people, even secular music by Christians (Alice Cooper considers what is does a ministry of sorts). However, thinking Christ is 'cool' is not going to get someone into Heaven. Going to church does not make one a Christian. It is important that we keep the Gospel message in the music and not water it down. Salvation only comes through belief in the atoning sacrifice of Christ, and THAT message doesn't come through enough in Christian and Cross-Over music.

Switchfoot is one of the striking bands to come out of the late '90's. There was a ton of great Christian music in the '90s.

I agree that contemporary music is a must to reach the youth of today. But we must measure the message that the music is sending through its lyrics to ascertain if it is the gospel message, which is plainly; without our acceptance of the sacrifice that Christ made to remedy our sinful nature and a total change of heart regarding that sinful nature, we are destined to an eternity apart from God. In essence, if we are to lead our brothers and sisters to the understanding and acceptance of God's mercy and are charged with being clear on that when witnessing to others, the words we use (lyrics) must be obvious to that end.

Take a poll of young people and see how many realize Switchfoot is Christian.

No doubt NONE will answer they knew that.

You cna't sense any Christianity in their songs, just bit of spirituality that can't be pegged down really.

It is part of the trend of Christian bands watering it down to get on secular radio.

And don't get me wrong, I like Switchfoot...listen to their songs all the time. But, I would not call them a Christian band because I really don't hear the gospel in their songs usually.

This thought process is scary. It's what our new pastor says too. It's a different thing that "I surrender all". It's a thought that says... I'll accept christ as long as the world still likes me. It's contrary to biblical teaching.
