Rocking For Christ

The growing clout of America's 100-million evangelical Christians is being heard loud and clear. Just turn on your radio, and you'll notice that a seismic shift in American culture is taking place.

Before, you could tune into different stations, which offered different music and different messages.

But now, as Correspondent Bob Simon reports on 60 Minutes Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT,, evangelical Christian music is flowing into mainstream media -- and changing it. In fact, Christian entertainment now brings in $4 billion a year.

Rappers and rockers are making hits and making money while spreading the gospel to national audiences. Christian groups can be heard on secular radio and seen on "The Tonight Show." Earlier this year, the group Third Day even played at the Republican National Convention.

"The fact that there are Christian themes now emerging in rock and that Christians are in rock is just representative of a spiritual desire or a spiritual hunger in our culture," says Cameron Strang, publisher of Relevant Magazine, a religious publication.

Praise choruses violate the Scriptural injunction against mantras.

They also have no depth whatsoever.

And some people are turned off by such overt pandering to the world and culture.

Perhaps some people aren't saved because of drums etc. Ever think of that?

The best you can do is be faithful to Scriptural standards and not give in to the culture. Unfortunately, many today do that thinking it will reach the young.

Being a young person myself, I know just how many ARE OFFENDED by such displays of pandering.

There is actually a pretty big "back to tradition" movement among the youth today.

Where is the Scriptural warrant for pandering in song?

I believe God uses music of all kinds to speak to hearts, and He is not limited to using "How Great Thou Art".

Do you think there is any music God would not use to speak to hearts?
Do you think that music can have a spirit that is contradictory to the message of Christ?

What about loud aggressive hard rock or heavy metal? Obviously fleshy sexual rhythms?

Do you find these to be consistant with the spirit and message of Christianity?
I don't.

I agree. My pastor, from when I was a kid, told me that Drums are The Devil. So I became a Bass Player instead. Then, he told me that "Bass" was just a euphemism for "Hell" and so I became a guitar player. He then told me that playing guitar was like musical masterbation, and I would go to Hell.

I play the Triangle, now.

The problem is that the LYRICS OF MODERN SONGS AREN'T SOUND.

Drums aren't sinful. But pandering and failing to produce God-centered lyrics IS!

I'm thinking of writing some Christian Death Metal just to tick off some blue-haired old ladies... ;0)

LOL! Reminds me of a poster on CO who described himself as a "Gay Christian Witch". He had all the bases covered.

There are Scriptural standards; we can't just do whatever we please.

Ask Nadab and Abihu. They offered worship (an offering) in the form God did not specifically command. They were killed.

Then don't listen to it. Amazing, isn't it, that OFF is as easy to turn as ON?

That's pretty scary - the inclusion of "Gay" and "Witch" kinda negates the other part...

As a Calvinist, I fully understand God is sovereign.

I also understand that we are to be in the world, not of it. And that the church service primarily exists to edify BELIEVERS.

It is not a camp meeting.

There are a Scriptural standards for what to include in worship and we ignore them at our eternal peril.
