Get Along? Get Real. (More 'Rat Pouting, Refusal To "Unite, Not Divide." Shocked, Anyone...?)
Washington Post ^ | 12/07/04 | E. J. Dionne

Posted on 12/07/2004 11:50:21 AM PST by KentTrappedInLiberalSeattle

The power of negative thinking is greatly underestimated, especially in politics.

Leaders often define themselves by what they are against, and political movements often discover their affirmative purposes when they engage in principled battles against ideas and institutions that they believe are wrong, even evil.

And now the Republicans are moving to weaken Social Security -- one of the great achievements of progressive government -- in the name of strengthening it.

No point in making even a casual stab at logical argument, apparently, when it's so much easier simply to lie like William Shatner's toupee. < /sarcasm>

More of Dionne just showing how totally dranged he continues to be.

"In the wake of President Bush's narrow reelection victory..."

I guess Clinton had landslide mandates in EJ's eyes.

"Naturally those of us who favored giving all Americans health coverage"

Gee, what a wonderful man you are--just GIVING it to everyone, after opening up the Free Healthcare Vault those meanie republicans are guarding.

When democrats start being honest in their phrasing--"Naturally those of us who favored taking more money from all Americans so we could make their healthcare decisions for them"--maybe someone will trust them. They won't VOTE for them, but they'll at least believe they are sincere.

E.J Dionne is a bitter and disappointed man. Obstructionism - yes, its the hallmark of a powerless minority. After 40 years when the sun rose and revolved around the Democrats, its finally sinking into them that they don't dictate the national agenda. So maybe they're finally waking up. I'd like to see more of them hate us. It'll ensure they'll be out in the cold for a generation.

Harry Reid poisoned the atmosphere with his hateful rhetoric. Daschle's barely gone and Reid is proving to be a vicious dirtbag.

'Rats genuinely, LITERALLY believe in the fairy tale notion of "free money": this vast, boundless sea of untapped funds out there (somewhere) which -- if only those stupid, stupid voters would allow them to access it! -- will fund, fully and forevermore, free cradle-to-grave health care; a lifetime supply of free food; and atomic-powered jet cars for poor people, among other fiscal wetdreams.

Not terribly unlike, say, your favorite pre-schooler's unwavering allegiance to the concept of an Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy. :)

Gee, I remember how the Dems were all harping on how the Bush/Republicans were going 'negative' on Kerry and the Dem platform and how bad that was.

Senate should vote to change the rules on fillibuster at the start of the new session. Then both parties can be true to their feelings to their hearts content. Let everything get an up or down vote.

Good point and one of the reasons why I refused to "unite, not divide" with the Dems and liberals for 8 years of Clintax. I don't expect those groups to be any different now that they're not in power.

Republicans did all they could to obstruct Clinton's judicial appointments.

Guess that explains why Clinton was unable to get Ruth Bader Ginsberg confirmed to the Supreme Court, in spite of the fact that she was a completely non-political nominee. She had no history of left-wing activism or extreme views, yet they badgered her endlessly at her confirmation hearings. They told us the world was we know would end if she were confirmed. They slandered a good woman.

The Republicans refused to even let her have an up-or-down vote. She would be on the court today if not for their obstructionism, character assassination and filibustering. Damn them all to hell.

You are right. Dionne is inept and his premises are false. In fact, his way of thinking is why the democrats lost big last election - mean, hate-America, obstructionists.

For example, let take this passage:

Abraham Lincoln defined himself against the spread of slavery. Franklin D. Roosevelt attacked the "economic royalists" whom he accused of plundering the working class. Ronald Reagan stood against communism's "evil empire" and high taxes.

These are false and one cannot make arguments on false premises. Abe Lincoln was also for "preserving the union". FDR was not "against the rich", as Dionne likes to think he is like a radical leftist of today - FDR was "for the little guy". Finally, there is a reason that Reagan was remembered as the "Sunny Conservative". There was a reason that people remembered his "optimism" last summer when he died. There is a reason he ran "Morning in America" ads.

Virtually all the presidents he mentioned were remembered by the positive things they did and said. But, I just hope the democrats follow Dionne's advice. Last election Tom Dasshole did what Dionne suggested and he is out of a job.

It is telling that "progressives" are now to be measured only in terms of what they oppose.

"...the way to eliminate is to assimilate."

Only if we accomplish said assimilation by convincing them of the correctness of our conservative ideology. Trying to win over the RATS by outspending them is a recipe fer disaster in '08, imho.

I think demographics dooms them. Democrats have most of the gays (presumably an under reproducing segment). A majority of the abortionists. Churchgoing women tend to marry and produce more children, and the bet is that conservative women get pregnant at an earlier age.

Add it all up and my guess is that conservatives are reproducing 1.5 to 2 times as fast and will turn te tide over the next 15 years.
