MOSCOW, December 6, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Russian news agency Novosti reported Monday that Russian scientists have succeeded in treating six individuals bed-ridden with spinal cord damage using non-embryonic stem cells derived from the patient's own nasal tissues. All six are learning to walk again.
Scientists at the Neurology Clinic of Russia's Blokhin Oncology Research Center removed neural stem cells from the lining of the nose, which were then grown in tissue culture. The resulting cells were injected into damaged areas of the spine, re-growing damaged spinal segments one at a time.
"No one has done anything like that before us," Andrei Bryukhovetsky, Director General of the Neurology Clinic said.
Also, when implanted into damaged cardiac muscle after a heart-attack, stem cells can fully restore the muscles of the heart without any scar tissue, according to Vladimir Smirnov, Director of the Experimental Cardiology Institute at the Russian Health Ministry.

Clearly adult stem cells from the patient circumvent the problem of rejection and that alone makes it a better choice. However, it does not lend it's self to mass production by the drug companies, and therefore is less profitable. That makes sense.
I heard the author of "Overdosing America" on CSPAN this weekend. Veeeeeeery interesting.

Follow the money..."
To be fair, mass production of stem cell treatment would make treatment more affordable as well. Customized adult stem cell treatment will always be more expensive than a one treatment fits all approach.

Do you think for a minute that being more affordable is part of their motive?
For that matter, people who have spinal cord injures are almost always on Social Security disability. SS does not pay for drugs (yet), and individual therapy would be more likely to be covered by SS.

Who cares what their motive is as long as the result is more affordable treatment? No one is in business to give consumers a good deal, but thanks to the market system, that is the result.
Incidentally, only a socialist would rather social security pay for more expensive treatment over less expensive treatment that anyone could afford.

Oh?
Only a murderer would rather kill a baby to get stem cells than get them from an adult with no killing involved.

"We have treated about 15 patients with SCI. The results depend on degree of damage of spinal cord."
I would think results would also depend on how soon this procedure was done after the initial accident or lesion.

Wouldn't that be the same for both adult and fetal stem cells?

They must have seen the cloned nose scene in Sleeper. I loved that one! "Checking the cell structure...." !!
But it's funny that you should mention Sleeper in connection with this thread, a Russian eye doctor developed radial keratotomy (a surgical treatment for nearsightedness that was the forerunner of today's Lasik surgery) when he saw that people depicted 200 years from now were wearing glasses, and he thought that was odd. I'm not ready to dismiss this as Russian snake oil quite yet.

I wasn't aware that babies were killed specifically to get their stem cells. I don't believe they are.
I am anti abortion, but also a realist. If a baby is going to be aborted anyway, why not use it's stem cells if they might help someone else? Doing so is equivalent to organ donation in my mind. Are you against that as well?
In the best of all possible worlds there would never be any abortions, and never any spinal cord injuries either. We don't live in a perfect world however. I believe in making the most of what we have rather than railing against reality.
Incidentally, I am against government sponsored stem cell research.
