Clearly adult stem cells from the patient circumvent the problem of rejection and that alone makes it a better choice. However, it does not lend it's self to mass production by the drug companies, and therefore is less profitable.

To be fair, mass production of stem cell treatment would make treatment more affordable as well. Customized adult stem cell treatment will always be more expensive than a one treatment fits all approach.

For that matter, people who have spinal cord injures are almost always on Social Security disability. SS does not pay for drugs (yet), and individual therapy would be more likely to be covered by SS.

Who cares what their motive is as long as the result is more affordable treatment? No one is in business to give consumers a good deal, but thanks to the market system, that is the result.

Incidentally, only a socialist would rather social security pay for more expensive treatment over less expensive treatment that anyone could afford.

But it's funny that you should mention Sleeper in connection with this thread, a Russian eye doctor developed radial keratotomy (a surgical treatment for nearsightedness that was the forerunner of today's Lasik surgery) when he saw that people depicted 200 years from now were wearing glasses, and he thought that was odd. I'm not ready to dismiss this as Russian snake oil quite yet.

I wasn't aware that babies were killed specifically to get their stem cells. I don't believe they are.

I am anti abortion, but also a realist. If a baby is going to be aborted anyway, why not use it's stem cells if they might help someone else? Doing so is equivalent to organ donation in my mind. Are you against that as well?

In the best of all possible worlds there would never be any abortions, and never any spinal cord injuries either. We don't live in a perfect world however. I believe in making the most of what we have rather than railing against reality.

Incidentally, I am against government sponsored stem cell research.
