LIVESTRONG Bracelets Spark Charity Fad
Newsday.com ^ | December 6, 2004 | MARTHA IRVINE

CHICAGO -- It's just a simple band of yellow rubber, which bears the word "LIVESTRONG" and sells for $1 as a fund-raiser for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, an organization the celebrated cyclist began for fellow cancer survivors. But the yellow bracelet has become a must-have item -- and has prompted charitable organizations nationwide to create their own versions, made with various colors, materials and messages.

Jennifer Longley wears her yellow bracelet in honor of her many relatives who have had cancer, including a grandfather who lost his tongue and voice box and an aunt who died of ovarian cancer.

"I also wear it for me, because I know that this is something that I will continue to deal with in my future," says Longley, a 24-year-old who works for the Cornell University Press in Ithaca, N.Y.

Jason "Jazz" Skipworth, a 26-year-old scientist at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, says his bracelet gives him "the extra motivation to work that much harder."

And Eric Nobis, an amateur bike rider in Seattle, is convinced that his bracelet "makes me cycle faster."

Some liken the fad to the POW-MIA bracelets people wore for imprisoned and missing soldiers during the Vietnam War, or say the bracelets are the latest twist on the red and pink ribbons that have become synonymous with AIDS and breast cancer, respectively.

Today, red bracelets are being sold to raise money for everything from diabetes research to children with HIV. Vistacare, a health care company in Scottsdale, Ariz., is giving out burgundy bracelets with the word "Remember" to get people talking about the difficult topic of hospice care.

And next Monday, the Ohio Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Foundation will start handing out orange bracelets as a conversation starter about the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Yeah, those bracelets are everywhere. I thought it would be great to use bracelets in the operation a/c program and discovered that there's another adopt-a-soldier program that uses them. I bet it'll help his program takes off.

I wonder whether Kerry and Edwards are still wearing theirs, now that they know they are losers and props won't help them?

I call it the "empty scrotum sympathy band" based on the guys I see wearing them.

Looks like a 'blue state' thing....

"empty scrotum sympathy band"

Is this something popular among Republican Representatives with their stand against King George's 911 Intel plan?

Since I was a volunteer, I got a bush/cheney blue bracelet. No, I'm not selling it on ebay, gonna check on how much it's going for, though :-). I also got a button with the president's picture on it, and I'm keeping that as well.

I'm starting to feel prejudged because I live in a blue state. Take a look at the county map for Washington--it's almost all red except for the Seattle counties.

"I see that you are a kook."

I see your vision is greatly clouded. It's probably all the Republican Party Punch you've been drinking.

Apology accepted. :-)
