The vertical profile and stepped silhouette of its facade, together with a sleek two-story lobby, make the Field Building one of the city's most distinctive Art Deco buildings. Built by the estate of department store founder Marshall Field, it was the last major office building completed prior to a two-decade construction hiatus caused by the Great Depression and World War II. Its site formerly was occupied by the Home Insurance Building (1884), a pioneer in metal-frame skyscraper technology.

Once the live fuel burns out there will be nothing left to burn. Typically not a big deal.

In my salad days, I worked for an insurance company in this building. It was an old-looking rabbit warren at that time and still may be despite decades of ostensible modernization veneer. Gloomy halls and crevices. Countless small one/five-person offices in addition to large companies occupying several floors. I'm surprised it didn't burn down a long time ago.

UPDATE: The AP is reporting a total of 37 people were injured in last night's fire at the LaSalle Bank Building (135 S. LaSalle) in Chicago. 22 of the injured persons are firefighters. A hospital spokesman stated that 3 people are on ventilators - 2 of which are firefighters.

Some streets around the building are closed, and they will be conducting an investigation to see if the building is still structurally sound.

I hope the fire department doesn't make the decision to "pull it", like they did WTC 7
