As I recall, there were several incidents of violence in Afghanistan against people trying to register to vote. What happened? They showed up the next day in even greater numbers! I have no doubt that there may be acts of terrorism by the Islamofasist, because if the elections are held, their days are numbered. Whatever government is elected into power will make it their first priority to wipe out all "insurgents" for the sake of Iraqi stability, and the people will be much more willing to follow a leader they elected. To postpone the elections will be pandering to the terrorist, and that is EXACTLY what they want.....

iraq has the potential to be much worse then the incidents in Afghanistan. The iraqi insurgency is 100 times more organized then the Afghan one. In fact, the election itself could lead to civil war in the country. if that happens, US public support for the war will drop from the low 50s, into the 30s, it will be unsustainable.

yes, you are correct, the new government will have the legitimacy to conduct the civil war and wipe them out. but make sure that they can before you look forward to that plan. so far, the iraqi police and security forces have demonstrated poor performance.
