Dec 6, 2004 TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's judiciary has tried a number of arrested al Qaeda members and verdicts have been issued, a senior judiciary official was quoted as saying on Monday.
Tehran Justice Department head Abbasali Alizadeh told the semi-official Fars news agency Iran's "high-ranking officials are satisfied with the issued verdicts," but did not elaborate on what the verdicts had been.
News of the trials is likely to anger Washington, which has repeatedly called on Iran to hand over all al Qaeda suspects it is holding. Guilty verdicts sentencing them to long jail terms would make that an even more distant prospect...

The most important figure that Western intelligence agencies say may be there is Saif al-Adel, an Egyptian. He is widely believed to have taken charge of al Qaeda operations after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the September 11 attacks, was captured in Pakistan.
Saudi sources said last year that Iran had also detained Saad bin Laden, a son of Osama, as well as al Qaeda spokesman Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, who is a Kuwaiti.
FYI
Terrorists tried terrorists?
I suppose that they will be deported across the border to Iraq.
Mullahs running scared?
I read the headline: Iran Has Tried to Arrest Al Qaeda Members ;-)
I'd have no problem with that, and I imagine neither would our 150K troops stationed there. :-)
I did the exact same thing, not catching my mistake until reading the intro para.
Maybe, but doubtful IMHO. If they were scared, they'd likely be offering these terrorist goons up as bargain chips, not just doing as they darn well please and further irritating an already angry U.S. government.
Just saying they arrested, tried convicted and sentenced doesn't mean anything. They support them, and they are more likely giving them cover while new schemes and violence are prepared to be unleashed.
Ya think??
Hasn't Bin Laden's son been under "house arrest" for some time now? I'm assuming house arrest in Iran means cushions to lie upon, dancing girls, a feast of food, etc.
It's never been confirmed by Iran. But the three names above have consistently appeared in print from "U.S. intelligence sources" as likely being in Iranian custody, whatever that means.
Iran was at war with Al-Qaeda long before the US.
Gee, it couldn't be a public relations move meant to blunt international calls for the dismantling of Iran's nuclear bomb program, could it? Nah...
"Just saying they arrested, tried convicted and sentenced doesn't mean anything. They support them, and they are more likely giving them cover while new schemes and violence are prepared to be unleashed."
They probably sentenced them to life in a cave in Pakistan.
Yep, the verdicts issued include community service such as blowing up westerners in places other than Iran.
I thought they were at war with the Taliban..
AFAIK they still back a warlord in Western Afghanistan
against the Kabul regime.
More likely gave them a new identity, a home or apartment among the other mullahs, an income, etc. Like keeping a pet pit bull.
