Senator Saxby Chambliss answers my Specter Email
Saxby Chambliss U. S. Senate | Saxby Chambliss

Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns about Arlen Specter becoming the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, and the comments he made regarding President Bush's judicial nominees. I appreciate hearing from you.

I have had the privilege of serving for two years on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Since I took office in the Senate, much of our work has been done in a very bipartisan manner. This has not been the case in the approval of President Bush's judicial nominees. The Constitution clearly states the Senate should give "advise and consent" to the President's judicial appointments, and our attempts to fulfill this responsibility have, at times, been thwarted in the Judiciary Committee. We've been in the trenches, and Arlen Specter has stood side by side with the majority, and gone toe to toe in opposition to the antics coming from the partisan Democrats. Senator Specter has been 100 percent supportive of the President's judicial nominees. You cannot ask for any more of a chairman than to be that way.

I expect the chairman of the Judiciary Committee to present the agenda of the majority and give 100 percent support to the President's judicial nominees. Senator Specter has personally assured me that my expectations and his intentions are one in the same, and I intend to hold him accountable to his promise.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me as always I appreciate hearing from you. In the meantime, if you would like to receive timely email alerts regarding the latest congressional actions and my weekly e-newsletter, please sign up via my web site at: www.chambliss.senate.gov.

It looks like he got enough complaints to create a special form letter specifically about Specter.

Job well done on putting the screws to Republican Senators regarding Specter. He has given assurances, and the result is a Chairman that will work hard on behalf of the President. If not he's out of a Chairmanship. It helps the Republican Party because we don't have a split before the second term even begins, and to be fair, he's been supportive of every one of the President's picks to date. I think he sometimes lets his mouth run quicker than his brain, and this episode is a fine example.
