About 5 fire engines convened at the intersection of Hylan Blvd near New Dorp Ln in search of the source of a mysterious explosion.
Car alarms were set off by the explosion and it shook up the person I spoke to via cell phone.
Police/fire are having trouble finding source of explosion. This is near the Atlantic Ocean, and could be a plane crash, but no flames on the horizon.
Friend questioned police/fire but they did not know the source. Police and fire units were in the area trying to find source.

My kids make loud noises by putting dry ice and a little water in a plastic pop bottle.
It makes a very loud noise and splinters the plastic so fine that you can't find much left.
They always do it out in the open, like on the front lawn, or out of town in a remote area.
The plastic particles only travel about 10 feet.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the explosives the french "lost" on an airliner during a training exercise?

They have this problem in DC all the time. It's exploding manhole covers. Methane builds up in a sewer, seeps into the pipes where electrical and phone lines are run, and BANG.
You find these by looking for open manholes.

Does "explosion" mean just the audio or did someone see a mushroom cloud as well?
