Palestinian couple gets engaged during hearing in military court

It was hard to tell who was more surprised at the Ofer court last week – the Israeli military judge presiding over the hearing, or the accused, Muhammad Zeidat, 22, a Fatah Tanzim member suspected of placing two bombs near troops and involvement in two shooting attacks.

During the court proceedings, Zeidat's girlfriend stood up and asked the judge for permission to conduct a brief engagement ceremony before Zeidat returns to jail.

"I know that my English language is poor, but Muhammad and I planned to be engaged before he was arrested," said Mona al-Adra, 22. "I did not come to the court to make trouble, I want peace and I would like you to allow me to be engaged to Muhammad here at the court and exchange rings with him."

The surprised judge said he first had to consult with the head of security and Zeidat's lawyer. Shortly after, the judge permitted the two to conduct a brief engagement ceremony outside the courtroom.

Both Zeidat and Adra's family, who were in the courtroom, attended the ceremony. As soldiers gathered outside the court clapped, the young couple exchanged rings and hugged each other.

Sources in the IDF confirmed the event and said that the judge permitted the two to exchange rings outside the courtroom. Zeidat then had to return his ring for "security reasons," the sources said.

Outside the courtroom, Adra said ,"I feel that we have created a legend. Muhammad needed encouragement and a reason to strengthen his spirit in his jail, he has to know that there is someone special waiting for him," she told reporters.

Zeidan's father, Khaled, said that they were not aware of Adra's plans. "I couldn't control myself: My eyes drowned in tears. This is a solid proof that the Palestinian people are willing to live, [that] they aren't seeking death of imprisonment."

Just goes to show that couples who jihad together, stay together. It does put that "till death do us part" thing in a bit of a different context.

Well, let's see, maybe they could start by not strapping bombs on to the backs of their kids and sending them off to kill themselves in the blind hope that maybe they might kill a Jew.

Well, if she goes and gets pregnant while he's in jail, does that mean her fiancee is now responsbile for the child?
