Walter Moore is a 45-year-old business trial lawyer with 20 years' experience. Moore graduated with honors from Princeton and Georgetown Law; has a degree in Public and International Affairs; was an Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal; and taught legal research and writing.
Moore is a moderate Republican, and is the only Republican running for mayor. Think a Republican can't win? Think again: Richard Riordan -- another moderate Republican, lawyer and Princeton man with no political experience -- was elected mayor twice in the 1990's. Plus, 26.2% of L.A. voted Republican in the recent presidential election -- which will give Moore more than enough to win so-called "non-partisan primary," because the five liberal Democrats running will split the rest of the vote five ways. That means Moore will be in a run-off against one of five career politicians.
Once Moore is in the run-off, the media will (finally) start giving him press coverage. That, in turn, will win Moore the run-off election, because his platform appeals not just to moderate Republicans, but also to moderate Democrats and Independents. Moore is the only candidate who has vowed to fight "pay to play " politics and illegal immigration. Moore is also the only candidate who has vowed to make our animal shelters "no-kill" immediately, and to establish a dog beach. Moore is also the only candidate who wants to repeal, not reform, the business tax.
Please take a few minutes to review Moore's website. If you agree "Moore is Better," please take action to help him win. You don't even have to send money! You can help by: inviting Moore to speak to your neighborhood council or other civic group; e-mailing your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to tell them to vote for Moore; putting a "Moore is Better!" bumper sticker on your car, and sign in your yard; and downloading and distributing flyers from this very website.
We don't have to settle for corrupt and mediocre "pay to play" career politicians. Take some action to improve your city. Moore is doing his part: he's taking a leave of absence from his law practice, without pay, for eight months to campaign full-time. Do your part. Spread the word. You'll be glad you did. Moore is Better!
Walter Moore:Fight Illegal Immigration
Everyone feels sympathy for people in third-world countries who want a better life. But sympathy does not require us to commit fiscal and cultural suicide. Illegal immigration has gotten completely out of control. It is bankrupting our government, shutting down our emergency rooms, overcrowding our schools, jails and housing, and destroying our American culture. You need look no further than the many Spanish-language billboards and signs to see our city is being taken over by people who don't even bother to learn our language. Our country -- like every other country -- has a right to limit the number of people who move in each year from abroad. Moore promises that, when you make him the mayor of L.A., he will do everything he legally can to deport every single illegal alien as quickly as possible. Moore's position on illegal immigration is quite simple: "What part of 'illegal' don't you understand?" By definition, illegal aliens have no more business being in our city than a burglar has being in your house. They have no right to welfare, free medical care, free education for their children, drivers' licenses, in-state tuition for college, or the many other benefits of citizenship. They do not pay taxes. This is not a complicated issue. Illegal means illegal. Period. Calling them "undocumented" is a transparent ploy to distract us from the fact that they are here illegally. The career politicians in City Hall, however, have tied the hands of the LAPD in combating illegal immigration. Special Order 40 prevents our police from arresting people for violating our nation's immigration laws and handing them over to federal authorities. Result? Our emergency rooms have to close down because they're overwhelmed by illegal aliens seeking routine care without paying; our schools are bursting with children who shouldn't be here in the first place; our Section 8 housing subsidies pay rent for people we should evict from our country; our law enforcement officers and other citizens are murdered by criminals who flee to Mexico, which refuses to extradite them; American workers have to compete with illegal aliens who can work for less because they don't bother paying income taxes; etc., etc., etc. If you elect Moore Mayor, he will do everything he can to enforce our immigration laws. Moore will not sit idly by while illegal aliens crowd our schools, jails and hospitals, and drain our public coffers. We have no duty to sit idly by while L.A. becomes Tjuana. The United States Courts of Appeals have ruled that police can enforce immigration laws. With your support, Moore will compel the City Council to repeal Special Order 40 and direct the LAPD to turn over to the federal government every illegal alien they find. Moore will urge the Council instead to adopt a very simple ordinance along the following lines: "All city employees are hereby authorized and directed to cooperate fully with federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws, and all ordinances, orders and manuals to the contrary are hereby declared invalid." Other steps Moore would take include the following: requiring all City Employees to show they are in our country legally; reviewing the City's records (e.g., Section 8 housing subsidy records) for evidence of illegal immigration, and investigating same; prohibiting City agencies from discriminating against job applicants on the grounds that they "only" speak English; and using his position as Mayor to pressure the City Council, the State Government, and the Federal Government to enforce our nation's immigration laws. This is not, by the way, an exhaustive list. Moore pledges to do everything he legally can as Mayor to fight illegal immigration. Why is Moore so adamant about this issue? Because illegal immigration is out of control. In January 2003, the Department of Homeland Security estimated that there were 2.2 million illegal aliens living in California. The Department also reported "Mexico is the largest source country for unauthorized immigration to the United States," and "[t]he estimated unauthorized resident population from Mexico increased from about 2.0 million in 1990 to 4.8 million in January 2000." They've got to go home. How much do illegal aliens cost taxpaying citizens? According to the L.A. County Sheriff's Office, the cost of jailing criminals who happen to be illegal aliens is $150 million per year -- and that's not counting the cost of the injuries inflicted on their victims, property stolen or damaged, public defenders, prosecutors, etc. Sheriff Baca has stated that 40,000 of the convicts in state prisons are illegal aliens, as are 23% of the inmates in the County Jail. According to the L.A. County Department of Health, moreover, we spend $350 million per year providing health care services to people who have no right to be in this country. So that's $500 million per year -- not counting the cost of teachers and new schools for illegal aliens' children! Nor is it "racist" to ask that anyone who wants to live in our country play by the rules. "Racism" means discriminating based on race. There's nothing "racist" about enforcing immigration laws: we aren't discriminating based on race. Rather, we are simply distinguishing people who obey the law from people who disobey the law. Moore opposes bigotry, and rejects any claim that enforcing immigration laws constitutes bigotry. Countries all over the world limit immigration. The U.S., like any other country, is entitled to control its borders. Moore welcomes LEGAL immigrants -- people who obey the laws and, like the rest of us, pay taxes. But Moore will do everything he can to apprehend and deport every ILLEGAL alien in the City of L.A. While our city, alone, cannot stop them from coming into the country at the border, we can certainly make our city the least attractive destination in America for law-breakers.
