NEW YORK A cargo plane carrying 150,000 cartons of illegal cigarettes was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport, authorities said.
Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms seized the cigarettes Tuesday morning as part of a nationwide effort to halt sales of contraband tobacco. Buyers of illegal cigarettes usually hope to avoid city, state and federal tobacco taxes, the ATF said.
The cargo airline, which was not identified, was cooperating with the government and no charges were expected to be filed.

Roll your own is the way to go that's for sure. Can't beat it, Mears. Without a doubt. I'm tired of balancing the state budget on my shoulders.

Bringing cigaretts in from other countries in order to pay less = bad.
Importing prescription drugs from Canada in order to pay less = good.
Typical political bureaucracy / control.

"Individuals that ordered these cigarettes are liable to pay those taxes, and the state and the city are entitled to collect their taxes," said ATF spokesman Joe Green.
What a pompous government leach! Since when is anyone liable to pay taxes for "ordering" and never receiving a product? Since when is the state and city entitled to their taxes? I suppose the fact that our money belongs to us never even occured to this tar and feather candidate!

Don't you mean the "Federal Bureau of Firearms, Alcohol, Tobacco and Explosives", otherwise known as the Federal Bureau of FATE?

With all that work you're doing on your new computer, you still have time to invite MH to get "bare" with you? I know it is cold in your tundra, but I figgured you had enough logs for the fire!

"Otamedia sold Marlboros for as little as $13.95 a carton - allowing buyers to evade as much as $50 in city, state and federal taxes. "
Is that for real? A carton of smokes could cost $60+? Converting to Canadian funds, that's more than I'm paying for smokes (roughly CDN$8.00/pack of 25, by the carton). Before the recent drop in the US$, it would have been even more in CDN$. Big suprise - ridiculously high "sin" taxes on things like cigarettes leads to smuggling.

Acohol, tobacco, and firearms. I have only two things to say:
1. Who's bringing the chips?
2. Sounds a lot like deer camp to me.

I don't know, but putting guns, beer, cigarettes and bombs into one neat little category seems kind of ridiculous to me...

Re:If there's one thing we don't need, it's contraband cigarettes. Good thing the ATF was there to smoke 'em out... ;-)
Is there really people that stupid out there? We have terrorism, gun running, illegal border crossings, etc. all of which are jeapordizing our way of life. The government starts losing money off taxes that they impose on people addicted to a product that they inadvertantly endorse, so they go balls out to stop this. You are as much a dumbass as the government is corrupt. I think Americans need to stand up against our corrupt, dictating, double standard government.
If the government thought that smoking was such a health issue, why not make it illegal, instead of raising taxes and makeing money off the death of americans. Its the law to wear seatbelts because it kills people, yet the govenment allows cigarettes to be legal even though it kills more people. Why, because they are makeing a crapload of money.
I think americans need to stand up for themselves, remember the "Boston Tea Party?"
If people can get away with not paying this corrupt government taxes on cigarettes, all the power to you.
