How do you propose that these gays that are married file their federal taxes? Up until recently, they would have been better off filing as two single people, rather than filing as a married couple. If the federal government doesn't recognize gay marriage, then gays are no worse off tax wise.
Is it okay for a state to determine the status of gays (married or not) and send the bill to Washington for all to pay?
I'm not sure what kind of bill there would be.

Here, you are assuming that they both work. If only one works, it is much cheaper to file as "married." The bill they would send to Washington is this tax break. Someone has to make up of the difference. That someone is the rest of us.
