There is one comfort I have in all this: an open-borders free-trade agreement like the European Union would bode extremely ill in the Western Hemisphere, almost overnight. At least the European countries could pretend that their system was working for a while; most of them, after all, had similar levels of affluency. Not so with the Americas. The FTAA, if implemented, will collapse on its own way almost overnight, and will quite possibly give way to violent ethnic conflicts.

You are right on the money. The economic and cultural differences between America/Canada and the rest of the Western Hemisphere are so great that it will never work. Like you said, if Europe, a continent of countries that have much in common are struggling mightily with their Economic Union there is virtually no hope at all that is can be copied here in our hemisphere. And why on earth should it be copied?

The question is, how hard will our Tyrannical government push to force FTAA on the American People before it collapses on its own weight?

C'mon....don't be so naive. What employer wouldn't be "willing" to shed his American workers @ $ 15/hr. that forces him to pay FICA and other payroll style taxes in favor of a "willing" Mexican @ $7/hr. thus being able to criminally EVADE all those payroll taxes that honest American employers are stuck paying. Add to that all those "services" for his new employees that taxpayers get sucked into paying because he's not paying a livable wage and you have a recipe for disaster. It's all about the greed employed by many employers to lower their labor costs without having to lower the price of their end product. Noticed any decrease in the price of new houses even though many Mexicans have replaced American contractors.....noticed the crap work they do also?

Yes I have, scabby doesn't begin to describe their slop artist, speedy gonzales, $hit work. Can't get a job as a contractor with an honest bid in the residential sector hardly, specially if you don't speak wetback.

Bush better get off his high horse on this one!

Inform me if I'm wrong...with the guest-worker proposal wouldn't it: 1. Allow us to TAX the immigrants 2. Help us to keep track of them better.

Afterall that's what the rest of us have to deal with: taxes & SS numbers following us around the country for ID purposes.

Republicans warn of party split over immigration

Wait til ya see what it does to this site.

Why would FR split? Bush-bots? I got the impression that the majority of posters here were not for Bush's agenda on immigration.

Almost embarrassed by the fact that I participated in helping to get the vote with four days of hard work (when it really mattered going into the election) on the street for the republican party. That's not counting financial contribtions, etc.

The president better start paying attention to the ground swell of Conservative America - we will rise up just like the the movie "Braveheart" if you think turning the United States into a third world country is going to fly. Granted that the government can squash someone like me - but get a clue rino's, there is a nation of us!!! They will not be stand for the BS you are trying to pedal.

Laugh now at the radical sound, but have to ask if you've heard this old joke?

"Do you know what the difference between a mercenary and a hero is?"

"No, what?"

"Depends on whose in charge".

I beg to differ on the quality of Mexican labor.

Maybe it's different in the cities, but out here in rural (Western) North Carolina where I live, the Mexicans do top-notch work - much better than the Gringos.

Not only that, they show up on time every day and work hard all day long. They don't bitch, either - it's obvious that they are happy to have a job (sorta' like Americans used to be.)

I hate to tell y'all, but the contractors here prefer Mexicans because they are better workers, not because they are cheaper.

Like I said, maybe it's different where you live.

"63 licenses" What more needs to be said? But then again this issue is where the NYTs and the WSJ editorial boards see eye to eye in their conspiracy to screw America.

I have a place in Mesquite,NV, and the mexicans have basically taken over. The housing quality is horrible for the dollars forked out by the end user. Talk about screwing the pooch - you should see the trash that sells for the $150 range! Second biggest problem, the illegals that a lot of contractors love to use, stack four families into single family dwelling.

I do better renting a place in SLC,UT, and doing commercial jobs, than to fight with the Mesquite gig.

If you'd like a closer look at what is happening in the west - get on gubamyster's ping list. I don't think the east knows how bad the southwest has gotten.

But does the guest worker visa allow these workers to avoid paying those taxes?

CNN is reporting that Sen. John Warner is not thrilled with this intelligence bill as the Senate wants it. Lou Dobbs is worth watching. We need to work on Warner.

I believe you, but maybe the quality problem is with the contractors, not the workers. But then the contractors build to what the people want, and it's been my experience that home-buyers have no clue for the most part.

The housing quality is horrible for the dollars forked out by the end user.

Same here. I have actually worked on $3 million plus homes that were guaranteed to be unconfortable to live in and impossible to maintain.

That's why I always build my own ;-)
