Whistle-Blower Crackdown Spreads
Newsweek ^ | 12/01/04 | Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball

Posted on 12/03/2004 12:21:08 AM PST by paudio

As many as 100 FBI agents, federal prosecutors and other department employees are likely to be asked—possibly as early as the next few weeks—to sign broadly worded statements waiving any confidentiality agreements they had with journalists about the anthrax case, Justice officials tell NEWSWEEK. The waiver statement was recently ordered by a federal judge at the urging of lawyers for bioterrorism expert Dr. Steven J. Hatfill, who has filed a lawsuit alleging that government officials leaked damaging personal information about him in an effort to connect him with the anthrax attacks.

From the article:
At that point, the FBI agents called up the former official’s lawyer and stepped up the pressure, saying that other witnesses at the White House had signed the statements. “If he’s got nothing to hide, why won’t he sign,” one of the agents asked, according to the former official’s lawyer.

Coerced waivers of "confidentiality agreements" with reporters..
This article refers to both the Hatfill case, and the Valerie Plame case..

Verrrry Interesting...

A confidential, secure and anonymous website to report knowledge of ethical or legal transgressions (e.g. corruption/bribery/extortion/etc.) by the government and/or judges.

Pretty much everyone agrees that Dr. Steven J. Hatfill is the guy that sent the anthrax. Unfortunately, they only have circumstantial evidence.

The DOD would like to sweep the whole thing under the rug. It is embarrassing that one of their own employees was responsible for the attacks.

Someone or someones in the DOD or the administration have hindered the investigation from the start. These FBI agents are being attacked for doing nothing more than their jobs.

But Hatfill’s lawyers clearly have their own ideas. They intend to depose a long list of the agents and prosecutors who have worked on the anthrax case and intend to, they have indicated, target first and foremost any that declined to sign the waivers.

They need to depose the agents who met with Rosenberg and staff members of three congressmen. And depose those staffers as well.

"It is embarrassing that one of their own employees was responsible for the attacks."

I don't know that Monday.
Please cite your sources.

Thank you.

The Plame case, including the validity of such “waiver” statements, is headed for a showdown next week when a federal appeals court hears arguments about whether two reporters, Judith Miller of The New York Times and Matthew Cooper of Time magazine, should be incarcerated for refusing to answer questions about their contacts with administration officials who signed the waivers. But largely overlooked is that the Plame waiver appears to be catching on as an accepted practice to pressure reporters to reveal their sources.

Good grief. It seems pretty plain to me. If a source spoke with a reporter and then waives confidentiality there is simply no reason on God's green earth that reporter should then not speak about the conversation.

I will look forward to the results of the appeals court ruling, (unless the reporters reach a deal before that---I kind of hope they don't and the courts rule on this).

There was also a program on the history channel that discussed Hatfield's crusading nature on the subject of bio-terrorism and what he felt was the governments unpreparedness for an attack, among other things.

The fact that some of the anthrax envelopes contained warnings to take penicillin and warned that the envelope contained anthrax shows that the sender didn't intend to actually kill anyone, rather scare the government into greater awareness of bio-terror.

Many people in the bio-warfair field consider Hatfield the prime suspect. That is not to say it couldn't have been someone else, just that Hatfield seems far and away, most likely.

For Piasa. Most investigators and bio-warfair insiders think he did it. There are too many coincidences. The more you look into it the more convinced you will be too. His defenders are politically motivated. They gloss over things like his pathological lying by claiming he is just a big kidder.

See, your problem was in getting too much info that came directly or indirectly from a gal named Rosenberg. And because the Dems on the committee desperately wanted it to be the Rhodesian guy they misled everyone by humoring Rosenberg.
