JUSTICE FOR LORI BERENSON
New York Post ^ | 12/03/04

Posted on 12/02/2004 11:08:19 PM PST by kattracks

For months, Lori Berenson, New York's most notorious revolutionary tourist, has had her fingers crossed, counting on the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to overturn her 20-year sentence for terrorist activities in Peru.

The Lima government also clearly expected a ruling in Berenson's favor — it announced last week that it would defy any order by the Costa Rica-based court that the MIT dropout-turned-sandalista be set free.

But guess what? The court has upheld her sentence, imposed after a three-month civilian trial after her first conviction, by a military tribunal, was overturned following pressure from the Clinton administration.

The ruling is to be officially unveiled today, but Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo confirmed it yesterday. So did Berenson herself, after an Associated Press reporter reached her by phone at her prison.

[snip]

Even before the events of 9/11 awakened most of the world to the threat posed by terrorist groups, Berenson had lent herself to the pursuit of murderous politically inspired violence.

She spent years traversing Central and South America as part of militant Marxist groups before finally hooking up with Peru's Tupac Amaru — which, along with its allies, the Shining Path, has killed some 40,000 Peruvians since 1980.

At the time of her arrest in 1995, Berenson was living in a Tupac Amaru "safe house" — where 8,000 rounds of ammunition and 3,000 sticks of dynamite were being stored — as the group planned a terrorist attack on Peru's Congress.

[snip]

Nor did it help her cause, we suspect, that her chief lawyer is Ramsey Clark, the extremist former attorney general who's been a proven friend of the hate-America crowd around the globe.

Let her sit and take her medicine for playing tiddlywinks with terrorists. She should be thankful she's not a pancake like that other useful idiot, darwin award winner.

I have a little sympathy for her....but wouldn't it be nice just for kicks if these leftist would grovel and beg for forgiveness instead of using most opportunities in the past several years to denounce her captors and preach her commie crap?

what about a few tears?...

Yep. When she was arrested, I sat my then college-aged son down and used her as example of what can happen when you let youth and stupidity get the better of you.

I don't know if she picked up her lefty sympathies from her parents or on campus, but she wouldn't have been the first kid to go off to school and come back a friggin' commie sympathazer. I know I did. : )

But it's one thing to carry around Mao's Little Red Book in Ann Arbor, it's another to haul your rear down to some 3rd world country and play by their rules. You do that, and don't be surprised if you get burned. Parents really owe their kids a duty to tell them what the world is like outside of the US so they don't wind up under a backhoe or in jail for 20 years.

That said, let her rot.

Hey, Cy - I got a Christmas Card from the White House!

I've read other articles about her over the years, not to mention her parents website. Rest assured, Lori is a classic Red Diaper Doper baby. She grew up a lefty and, like Rachel Corrie, is rendering an invaluable service to her peers as an a cautionary example of a radical chica who (horrors!) is being made to actually suffer the consequences of her actions.

What's really frustrating about listening to such people talk from behind foreign bars is that they can rarely can bring themselves to say the American system is better. It's almost like it's a defeat for them to admit it.

It's not kosher to be a 'tourist revolutionary' meddling in the affairs of a foreign country.

A revolutionary claiming to be the victim is another tactic taught by the radical left and by radical jihadists everywhere.

Another court didn't buy it. Boohoo.
