St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | December 2, 2004

Three St. Louis public schools are experimenting with a new way to make sure pupils get the most important meal of their day, by delivering breakfast to their desks.

Aramark, the district's food service provider, launched the pilot project this week at Froebel, Ashland and Dewey elementary schools. All students and teachers in participating classrooms at those schools will eat free, regardless of whether they qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

Makes sense. I have a hard time concentrating at work and school without breakfast.

Free?

Nope - from you and me.

Can we afford to feed all school children and teachers? Many of whom are much better off financially than us? (Well, at least me, a retired ole grandma on a very restricted budget.)

Not free. At no cost to them -- at the expense of the taxpayers.

I wonder if the additional burden on the janitorial staff was considered... It'll take more money and manpower to clean-up.

Well if the "inner city" kids get breakfast for free, then so should every one else!

Ping.

This caught my attention today. Instead of "free breakfast" it should be "taxpayer subsidized breakfast".

There's no such thing as a free breakfast.

A company I applied to, in its recruitment advertisment said that breakfast was supplied to every employee every day. Man, I wanted that job.

You must have skipped breakfast this morning. This plan does not make sense.

Makes sense.

Sure it does but your missing the point. "Free" is used 5 times in this article. Lets not BS the public on how things work. The government takes things away from one group of people and gives them to another.

Unless these kids learn that someone else is paying for their meals, etc. , they will always expect entitlements.

To the students, it is free. It has no cost and will, therefore, not involve a loss to any student in every food fight so long as the district provides free ammunition. ANYTHING the government provides for "free," from health care to education to flu shots to breakfast loses value. If a city kids gets an apple or an orange as part of the free breakfast, I can bet what will happen the first time the ffirst time the racist thugs incite a school action. Does St. Louis have a professional basketball team?

Why stop there? Why not have Aramark deliver food to the kids in their beds at home, you know, the place where they should be eating their breakfast?

Why, oh why, do the schools feel they need to replace the parents in these situations? It is not the school's job to feed kids....but of course the schools sure in the heck aren't educating them....so why not just feed them?

Where are the parents to these kids? It's a shame that the schools are taking the jobs of the parents more and more these days.

I could teach kids out of my garage for 1K better than those hell holes they call public schools! And I'd make their butts bring their own breakfast and lunch !
