UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - John Danforth, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has resigned after less than six months in the job, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday.
Danforth, a former Republican senator from Missouri, wanted to give President Bush a chance to move in a different direction now that a new team was coming in following Bush's re-election on Nov. 2, U.S. sources said.
Some former colleagues noted that Danforth, a moderate in a conservative administration, had expressed frustration in recent speeches in his home state about not being more of an independent actor and having to check with Washington.
The news came as a ``complete surprise,'' a U.S. official said.
Danforth, who turned 68 in September, began serving at the United Nations in early July, succeeding John Negroponte, who left New York to become U.S. ambassador to Iraq.
He is an ordained Episcopal minister who represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate for 18 years.
Just before being named to the U.N. job, he served as U.S. peace envoy to war-torn Sudan for nearly three years, and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan was one of his most passionate interests during his time in New York.
One less Episcopalian in the Administration.
They need to send Micheal Savage to the UN to be the new Ambassador.
So who's the replacement ...
Savage?
Boortz?
{nobody}?
Send a message GW.
Sounds good to me. And "one less Episcopalian in the administration" is probably a good thing, too.
Just what we need at the UN, another punk.
Don't send Savage on MY behalf.
Mr. T.
What about Rudy? That would keep him high profile and in NY.
Just a topic for thought.
May he be the last.
If Savage got the post, what is the first country we'd be at war with and how many days would it take?
Good riddance. One less Liberal.
If Savage got the post, what is the first country we'd be at war with and how many days would it take?
Mexico, Savage would attempt to close the borders by force!
Can you say: "Justice Danforth"?
I doubt there would be war, but he may kill a few UN thugs lol.
OK, I'm slow today...plus I'm Catholic. Is there a problem with Episcopalians I need to know about?
:)
Sorry to see Danforth leave. He is a good man.
We should send someone with the right stature. How about a guy in a clown suit who sole role is to honk his (bike) horn and veto everything presented at the security council?
I recommend no replacement.
Now THAT I can get behind!!!
That would be an excellent start!
