Remember however, that teachers are not the sole guardians of society's morality or knowledge. Every member of society is protected by our constitutional rights and that includes the bus driver who simply announced her views and told the kids to relay the info to their parents. Most teachers in their arrogance would never think to tell the kids to do that. They are protected by tenure, by left wing unions, and by the misplaced respect that generations have had for teachers.

I don't think embryonic stem cell research is an appropriate topic to discuss with elementary school students. I'd have no problem if they were high schoolers, however.

IMO, this isn't a freedom of speech issue, it's a judgement issue.

You must have had a really bad experience in academia if you are sure that most teachers are arrogant and not deserving of any respect.

Just 25 years of college teaching and some adminstration should be enough to know about what's going on in academia and in teacher training...I did that too. I confess that my years of teaching have mostly been in NYS, a state where about 50+% of students who have graduated graduate from high school need to take remedial English and math.
