"Breathes there the man with soul so dead, who never to himself hath said: This is my own, my native land?" Most of us have heard those famous lines. But exactly why do they resonate across the years?
I believe its because they capture the essence of patriotism and national identity.
Today we have a large and rapidly growing population of immigrants, both legal and illegal, surging into the United States, many of them Hispanic. As a result, some well-meaning folks are advancing the idea that our schools should teach classes in Spanish to accommodate those who dont know English.
America, the modern politically correct theory goes, should become a multilingual culture to reflect the multicultural backgrounds of the various ethnic groups who now live here. Thus our election ballots, laws, public records, court proceedings, etc., should all be conducted in at least two languages and possibly more.
This misguided idea represents the epitome of enlightened liberalism.
I believe that such a move would be a cultural disaster because it would result in the Balkanization of American society. After all, there are currently more than 300 different languages spoken by various groups within America. . . . .

From a US standpoint, I think the US should make a constitutional amendment to make English our national language. Force everyone in this country to learn english. All public education classes should be taught in English except foreign language classes. I think it would be nice if every grade school taught another language. Maybe spanish in the southern states and french up by Canada. While we shouldn't allow ourselves to be balkanized, we should make an effort for our people to communicate with the countries around us.
Mexico is being shoved down our throats whether we like it or not. The Bush family likes it.
If I went to live in another country I would certainly have enough respect for that country's traditions to learn their language. Guess I'm old fashioned...
English as a national language has been tried before.. don't think it'll ever happen.
"Speaking English Preserves Our American Heritage?"
Try telling that line to the crowd at the post office, grocery store, 7/11 or bank! LMAO
You'll get a "no comprendo!"
I agree, the FL constitution has a "busines in english" amendment.
There is no reason for ballots to be in non-english.
You forgot the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security office, and all other governement offices where Spanish is a majority.
"You forgot the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security office, and all other governement offices where Spanish is a majority"
I try to avoid those places at all cost. LOL
we cut for low card around here to see who goes to the grocery. LOL
half the pinheads in the service industry in CA don't speakie English and the other half don't know what they're doing.
Both of the above happened to a friend and me when we went into one of those "Big Lots" stores the other day. We thought we had walked into Mexico. No one understood us, and we didn't understand them. They knew how to count the money, however. We won't be going back.
Who cares this is America not Mexico not Arabia not France not Germany ETC. When my ancesters emigrated to the US they learned English and I was told they wouldn't even speak Norwegian at home only English. If they caould do it so can the late comers. There is an organization trying to have English declared the national language but the pundits in DC are not accepable to the idea especially the

The kids who continue to speak ebonics are regular customers at the welfare office until they learn to speak so the rest of America can understand them. Hopefully some of them are bilingual..
Of course that excludes the rappers who are rich, and who NO ONE can understand. :^)
