******************************************************** Denver Mayor to Light Community Menorah (He's the "Merry Christmas" censor)

Posted on 12/02/2004 8:06:57 AM PST by churchillbuff

The Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado has announced that Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper will once again light the community Menorah on the first night of Chanukah. The public is invited to join in the annual community lighting ceremony on Tuesday, December 7 beginning at 5:30 pm.

“I look forward to joining the Denver Jewish community in lighting the community Menorah again this year,” said Mayor John Hickenlooper, who will make his second consecutive appearance at the Federation’s ceremony. “Chanukah brings communities across Colorado and the world together in celebration of light, freedom and peace.”

Colorado is quite conservative. Denver and Boulder are quite liberal and are therefore blue counties. Many urban areas are like that. The blue counties are surrounded by red counties. It is like another world surrounded by reality.

Spanaway Lori,

Some friends and I have come up with a new title for anyone who is afraid of/doesn't like Christians:

FAITH-A-PHOBE

We're constantly called "phobe this" and "phobe that", so this is the title we're using for them.

Brian

A lot of Jews, I've come to conclude, hate Christianity. That became evident when so many Jews tried to silence Mel Gibson and have his movie banned. It shocked me. Christian-haters came out of the closet - including a good number of "neocon" writers like Krauthammer and Safire.

Yep, they don't support us but they sure as heck expect us to support them. Neocons are the same cabal of anti-Christian Trotskyites that murdered millions of Christians in the Soviet Union so their anti-Christianity today doesn't suprise me. By making The Passion of the Christ, Gibson forced Old-Family-Red to show it's face.

I think everyone who attends this "Holiday Parade" should be wearing a shirt with "MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!" in big, red (and green) letters!!!

What if everyone sued the city for its unconstitutional ban of a particular religion? City governments seem to understand litigation very well indeed when the ACLU comes to town. Why not a multitude of lawsuits all at once?

In addition to everyone showing up with Merry Christmas signs, of course.

Immigrants generally are far more conservative than the white population in almost every area except immigration and in Hispanic's case affirmative action.

Hispanics love Christmas. They're noted for their bright Christmas displays on lawns, with plastic lip-up nativity scenes. I'm glad they're doing it.

why doesn't this clueless mayor call it ...hari krishna day....

Because the Hari Krishnas have no problem with Christmas. Nor do Buddhists, Hindus, Taoists, Shintoists, nor even Muslims. It's mainly a few atheists, a few neo-pagans, (and yes) Jews who are most upset with Christmas, albeit for different reasons.

As I've said about The Passion, it's not that "liberal" Jews hate Christmas and "observant" Jews don't. It's insecure Jews who hate Christmas (and that includes many Orthodox and conservative Jews) and secure Jews who don't mind Christmas (and that includes many liberal Jews.)

I grew up in a Jewish section of Queens, NY, went to school and worked in Manhattan, and live in Los Angeles, so I've been among Jews my whole life. Many don't hate gentiles -- but they do fear, and sometimes even hate, Christianity. They fear that their children will be picked on by the Christian majority for not celebrating Christmas, or that they'll appear to be "the other" in the office for not celebrating Christmas. Jews fear being a visible minority, because it's led to suffering in the past. Diluting Christmas with menorahs, or even suppressing Christmas, obscures Jews' minority status, so they feel safer.

People here talk of PC liberals -- but whose sensitivities do you think those PC liberals are catering to? Hindus, Buddhists, and Shintoists don't mind Christmas, though they're helpful as camoflague (i.e., "We can't celebrate Christmas because it will offend Hindus, Buddhist, Jews, Shintoists..."). Atheists and neo-pagans do mind Christmas, but bobody much cares what they think; no one caters to their sensitivities.

It's The Passion all over again. In a poll earlier this year, 71% of American Jews said they thought The Passion was anti-Semetic, so I'd estimate that 71% of American Jews are insecure Jews and thus dislike Christmas. 29% of American Jews are secure, and so don't mind Christmas. That includes many liberal Jews who don't mind Christmas. This issue is not liberal v. conservative.

You're very generous to draw a distinction between "secure" Jews who are ok with Christmas, and "insecure" Jews who would suppress it. I'd be less euphemistic - - anybody who wants to suppress this harmless, love-filled holiday is a BIGOT. And yes, after the hate that was spewed against the Passion, I've come to believe there is quite a lot of anti-Christian bigotry in the Jewish community. I'm not going to excuse it by suggesting that an excusable "insecurity" is behind it -- because these are intelligent people who have to know they aren't threatened in America, in fact they're most safe here than anywhere in the world, including Israel. No, it's bigotry that fuels the anti-Christmas venom.

Clinton banned CHRISTMAS and Halloween for the military back in 95/96. We had to go to special briefings where we were told we couldn't say Christmas. Halloween was called autumn harvest and Christmas was called winter festival or some stupid ass name like this. ....This is the same crap happening in Denver......

The Secular Taliban left the building Nov 2, 2004. They still don't get it.

Really? I didn't know that. Wasn't Clinton also the first president to light a menorah in the White House?

Here in Santa Monice we have something called Winterlit. Last year it was lots of plastic ice sculptures -- and two huge steel menorahs. But nothing blatantly Christmas-oriented.

I'm bummed that Christmas is suppressed because it may "offend sensitivities." But I'm doubly bummed that while Christmas must hide, it seems the menorahs are getting bigger and more numerous every year. It's that double standard that especially offends me.

President Clinton did no such thing.

Perhaps your local commander had a bug up his behind, but don't blame this on the president.
