Here's your fix
So Your Computer is Running Slow
When you first bought your computer, it zinged. It was faster than the computer you replaced. It was "upgraded"! But lately something happened. It slowed to a crawl, taking forever to boot up and net surfing - especially for you dial-up users - became excruciatingly, impossibly slow. It is possible to recapture that lost speed.
What happened? There are a few culprits. We personally hate long winded explanations, so we will keep this short. Or, you can forget the explanations and just skip to the fixes. For those of you still with us, here are the three most common reasons your computer has slowed down. Two deal with slow internet browsing and one is what is causing your computer to take so long to boot up is causing your computer to run slow.
1). You have not cleared out your temporary internet files.
2). You are loaded up with programs in your start menu.
3). You are loaded up with spyware and need to clean it out.
Okay, follow us here and we will take you to the steps and the explanations. Those other guys that jumped ahead are at the same page. But you now know where you are headed.

Did you download the Spyware doctor and see if it found any goodies hiding on your system? I have always relied on spybot and adware but this one found stuff the others missed.
Haven't tried it - I'll check it out some time, thanks.
But, does it just scan and tell you have the spyware, or can it also delete the spyware ?
The problem is a large percentage of computer users won't bother with maintaining their machine until it's too late. By that time, the machine won't even boot into Windows. Maintaining a machine at peak performance is too much work for most computer users.
It identified the spyware and allowed me to delete it. It also has a run-in-background funtion to protect as well. It has deleted a bunch of cookies as I have surfed tonight.
'Ad Aware does not seem to be catching anything while I am sure my computer has'
are you sure you have the newest build, Ad-AwareSE? and that you get the updates before scanning?
check your icon, Ad-Aware SE!!!
I use the adware se and still found a bunch of spy ware that it missed.
another new, free one (for 15 days) is
Giant antispyware
get it at download.com.
it has found some of the really bad ones that are all over office pcs and killing home pcs...while ad-aware and spybot 'say' they remove them, this Giant really goes deeper and kills em off.
Here is some info on the spyware doctor:
"The cream of the software crop! We highly recommend
this download." - Rated 5/5 by CNET download.com
Spyware Doctor will SCAN your PC for thousands of threats FREE!
Spyware Doctor is a multi-award winning spyware removal utility that detects, removes and protects your PC from thousands of potential spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, spybots and tracking threats.
Did you know that when a PC is infected with spyware that every keystroke, every website and every conversation could be recorded or monitored by the people or companies that may have secretly installed software on your PC. The consequences of spyware and adware infections can include banking and identity theft, unusual computer problems, slow Internet access, changed browser homepage, search pages or favorites, and excessive numbers of adware generated adverts such as pop-ups.
Anti-virus software and firewalls do not fully protect your system against the majority of spyware and privacy threats. Because spyware is commonly bundled with software downloads, attached to e-mails, or transmitted through networks it can appear to be legitimate software, but once installed it can be nearly impossible to detect and remove without the help of a dedicated spyware removal tool like Spyware Doctor.
When you consider the amount of valuable and confidential personal information stored on your PC, including credit card and banking details, private e-mails and documents, shopping and browsing habits, the risks of having software intruders snooping on your computer activity are obvious. Spyware protection should be an essential part of your protection to defend your privacy and computing habits from prying eyes and virtual trespassers, download Spyware Doctor and check your PC now.
Features of the registered version:
Detects and removes spyware, adware, malware, Trojans, keyloggers and trackware
OnGuard continuously monitors and protects your PC from browser infections and tracking cookies

Okay. I run Ad Aware.
But what do I run to clean up the mess my granddaughter left on my computer. She put on so many programs. I keep finding them.
Sounds like you have a winter project. Perhaps you should take the time to remove all of the junk and set a restore point. You could restore the system after she leaves and be back to normal.
if your running XP, make sure your have the latest free Windows update, Service Pack ??. I'm not sure of the version number of the Service Pack, but I know it prevents some of these problems. Also, run Ad Aware-SE regularly and switch to Firefox. In addition, go into Add/Remove programs and see if anything suspicious looking is installed. If you see something suspicious, find it in Google and see what it is. If its spyware, go ahead and remove it. I have done all these things, and havent had trouble for months.
