Like this one:
"Paul [Martin] and I share a great vision for the future, two prosperous, independent nations joined together by the return of NHL hockey." (Laughter and applause.)
The audience laughed and seemed pleased. Me? I smiled even though I didn't understand the joke. I just love the President's body language when he tells a joke.
I didn't know that is Minnesota's nickname. I like it.
As an aside, I wonder if Canadians appreciate the references to the U.S. as "America" and to their nation simply as "Canada."
There's not a lot of laughter in the Kerry compound.
Pres. Bush Address to Canadian Citizens in Halifax, Nova Scotia (12/01/04) (Real Player)
Excellent speech. The best part being no waffling or apologies for our smacking of Saddam. The man has a pair.
"With so much trade, there are bound to be some disagreements. I proudly ate some Alberta beef last night and -- (laughter) -- I'm still standing." (Laughter and applause.)
"As a member of Canada's Parliament said in the 1960s, 'The United States is our friend, whether we like it or not.'" (Laughter and applause.)
There was an excellent special on one of the cable channels about how Canadians helped stranded Americans in the wake of 9/11. I think it may have been on National Geographic channel or the History channel.
Yep, that was a terrific joke, delivered with perfect timing. Don't know if you got to watch the speech live, but I did. The President started out a little anxious, I think, so he slightly rushed the first part of the speech. But he got stronger and stronger as he relaxed. All in all, I think it was a marvelous speech, and our Dubya seemed quite happy at how it went.
Yes, that is the "poutine" joke.
My anti-American "friends" jab me every now and again with that one.
They say that President Bush was so stupid he didn't even know that Prime Minister Poutine did not exist.
I just say that President Bush didn't want to embarrass the guy and just answered him politely. But in his head he was thinking, "Poor Canadian, he doesn't even know the name of his own Prime Minister, but I'll play along."
Along with about 99% of people in the US.
Didn't see it live. I'll have to check CSPAN tonight for it. Undoubtedly, Brit Hume's show will have some clips. Bush conquers another nation!
You know, I've heard this, as far as I know, recent complaint that we refer to ourselves as Americans, when supposedly everyone who lives in this hemisphere is an American. It's actually a false argument and faulty reasoning.
From the Declaration of Independence forward, the full name of our nation has been the United States of America. Even well before the Declaration, the colonists were referred to by both themselves and the world powers of the day as "Americans." Given the full name of our nation, what else would we becalled: Unitarians? Statesians? What? The only name formulation that fits easily is Americans -- that is, citizens of the United States of America.
Virtually all of the other countries in this hemisphere have one or two-word names that make it easy to refer to their citizens in a way that smoothly identifies their nationality: Cubans, Canadians, Mexicans, Columbians, Puerto Ricans, Bolivians, Argentinians, Hatians, and so on.
However, our unique history, in which we went from 13 separate colonies to 13 sovereign states, to federated states and territories which later became states, makes the umbrella name for our union of states awkward in terms of formulating a short-hand name for its citizens. Only "American" fits, and only "American" has been in continuous use since colonial times.
Break out the violins...[snicker]
THE MAN has genuine courage. There are no words to describe the measure of my admiration for him.
Perfect! You have great wisdom.
C-SPAN has become highly unreliable about replaying the President's speeches -- at least it seems so from the vantage point of the Pacific time zone. On the other hand, they seemed to repeat Clinton and Kerry speeches constantly. Or am I being too, ahem, sensitive?!
Thanks for correcting the typo in the title. Much appreciated.
