An easy response in a PC world would be high altitude, high throw-weight nuclear burts. The primary effect would be EMP -- electromagnetic pulse -- halting the function of virtually all 20th and 21st century devices. Do it at night so the visible and psyops impact would be extraordinary.

The 'receiving' locations would be knocked back to the 1600s in terms of technology for a long time. Follow it up with a "sucks being you" message via leaflets.

No Al Jezeera tapes/broadcast, no Toyota SUVs to run around in, no ability to conduct banking or pump water, no loudspeakers on the mosques, and no functioning satellite phones, cameras or laptops for the foreign 'journalists' to report with. And no ability to manufacture modern weapons either -- factories wont run.

Follow up is easy. Just lob a couple more as needed to remove any modern convenience that pops up.

You get the added value of destroying the geostationary satellites that provide comms to the region as well, not that anything would be functioning to receive a signal anyway.

After a day or so the atmosphere would calm down, and our satellites could resume monitoring the affected region for ANY sign of electronic activity, because now the signal-to-noise ration would be MUCH better. The surviving emitters MUST have been hardened, so now they are are point targets. We get to play pin the JADAM on the donkey.

Your suggestion has the side benefit of being quite puckish, but it misses the point.

Arabs understand one thing: force or the threat to use it. Threatening them with deactivation of their PS2 sets just won't do it.

I strongly suspect that private warnings were given to the Arabs in 2001 concerning what would happen to them should their wayward sons cross the Rubicon of WMD. As Iran closes in on a nuclear capability, it is now time to establish an Eisenhower-like doctrine of Massive Retaliation, involving every element of our nuclear triad.

The Islamic Fascists will understand that, right down to the last shahid. Right now, our policy is too publicly ambiguous.

If and when a incident of nuclear terrorism occurs here in the U.S., one thing I can say for certain: we can pretty much figure on being along in taking care of business. From my debates with people I know in other countries such as Canada, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, etc., even if it was Toronto, Sydney, Paris or Amsterdam that got hit, they would still blame the U.S. and be bending over to appease their Muslim "neighbors".

We are on our own. And if it is they who takes the hit, I pray we don't lift a single damned finger to help them. For their cowardice and abhorrence to the truth, they deserve whatever they get.

Chris -- I believe, kindly, that you miss MY point. It's not about de-activating PS-2 sets. IT's about reducing the Arab world to a 18th century technology status.

No banks, no money. no phones. no mechanized transportation. no utilities. no centralized communications. no product and service distribution capability. no manufacturing capabilities. ... and no ability to generate cash from oil reserves. and on and on an on. They would be removed as a threat for years to come and rendered helpless and impotent. Thier governments would collapse. With no money and no digital loudspeakers, they would be what they were in the 1700s.

Think through the scenario. In an Armageddon-like, 1000-sun instant, the night sky is lit up for perhaps 30 seconds, and then nothing works. nothing. No information flows except rumors. No lights but lamps function, nor radios receive or transmit anything. And this goes on 'forever'. I think that would have more real impact than "threatening them with deactivation of their PS2 sets ..." Don't patronize me Chris. I know better, and so do you.

There's more to this scenario than I have posted, but do not belittle its efficacy.

There can be no other response. I say that the targets are known to the US now and have been known for a long time. That is a list that must be made public information and reviewed and updated on a regular basis and then continually broadcast to the world. "We know who and where you are. You are still a target." If you have the cross hairs on your neck, you get out (and we'll find you there, too) or you assist anti terrorist agencies in capturing the terrorists in your area... whether it's a city, village, or whatever. I think that Travis has posted about taking out their holy centers/places. That should be a plan not an option. Condi Rice next year needs to let each Middle East Ruler know that.
