Number of Elderly 'Living in Sin' Doubled in 10 Years
ElderLaw news ^ | Nov 26, 2004

Posted on 11/30/2004 4:02:40 PM PST by nickcarraway

The newly analyzed 2000 census data has revealed at least one shocker: The number of men and women 65 and older who choose to live together without getting married has nearly doubled since the 1990 census.

The AARP Bulletin reports that 266,600 unmarried partners over age 65 were cohabiting in 2000, and demographers think the numbers are much higher, since many are reluctant to report their living arrangements.

"What stops many of them from tying the knot is the prospect of financial loss, a worry that trumps any desire for the religious or social blessings of marriage," the Bulletin article states. "Remarriage may mean giving up a former spouse’s pension, Social Security and medical insurance." (Remarriage could also mean later responsibility for long-term care costs, no matter what a prenuptial agreement may state.)

I actually agree with all that.

Then you're sick.

Good point, but its not a bad idea. It's not like two 70 somethings will be having children out of wedlock.

I head a report on CNN a few days ago about how AIDS is on the rise among oldsters in Florida. Apparently the fellows are outnumbered by the gals six to one - - so they've been "spreading" it around, along with other STDs......really the unspoken secret of Florida retirement communities.....

"I think seniors deserve a break. Let them be."

I agree.

The kind of "compassionate conservatism" you espouse probably won't play very well among the mob who've collected at this august forum over the past few years, though.

Be that as it may, I'm sure no one's taken into account seniors would lose a sizable percentage of whatever meager retirement monies they're receiving if they were to get married.

In which case, it'd be our very own government's severely screwed up tax policies that'd in reality be promoting the the old timers to live in blasphemous sin, wouldn't it? ;^)

Of course the stone throwers?

...they'd never admit that.

You're misinformed about Viagra. That drug was already in use for treatment of angina when nurses notices a certain "side effect".

LOL! Nice work.

Aside: Did you ever wonder why most Christians are ashamed of their bodies which God supposedly created in his image? Isn't there a contradiction in there somewhere?

What exactly is the point of getting married when you're over 65? Kids are out of the question. Chances are one spouse will suffer a catastrophic illness before the other, and then the survivor gets to spend their nest egg keeping the other alive (for a little while longer). And of course the kids won't be happy about splitting the inheritance with their parent's new spouse. Why not live in sin?

Viagra's another topic. Reprehensible, in my opinion, not that it doesn't have uses but the billions in R&D could have helped a real disease instead.

Oh absolutely. Every penny should have been spent on research in AIDS or prevention of Hemorrhoids. /sarcasm

Of course viagra MADE billions for it's company allowing it develop "real drugs" that might meet your standards.

In my mom's case if she remarried, she would lose a significant pension and health care benefits. Bet thats true in many cases.

My sainted Mother lived in sin three times that I am aware of. Once with my dad after their divorce, once with my stepfather before his children found out, and once with a man that they faked marriage for his children. She always kept my sister and I informed, but, never asked our permission because it was none of our business!!!! But as she lay dieing of cancer it was my sister and I that were there. The moral is you have to give your parents the room to grow and let them know you always love them.

It's not just the taxes. If they marry, only one gets SS, no both, or if both do it's greatly reduced. They would not longer get a deceased husbands SS. or benefits. For elderly today, it's either live the way they are or face poverty, the likes which we have never known. When someone has 4 or 5 meds a month, they either have to keep those benefits or die without them.

I can see the financial aspect. The answer would be for the government to change the marriage penalties, at least for those who reach this age. These are the people who built our country, the heros of the past decades. The way they are treated is horrible. I have worked with a lot of them.

Could it just possibly be that libs are getting older? They did exist before all this same sex marriage thing, just not so many, and they weren't in your face about it.

That would be my impression.

It's financial. Two unmarried seniors get more money than married couples.

It's the only way they can survive.

Good going I say.

Hey, let's not get sidetracked over geezers and marriage when there are brave fairies out there losing valuable benefits because they can't marry. Whose more important, your parents or the tinkerbells?
