Brokaw Astonished Over NYTimes Reporter Being Banned By White House Tue Nov 30 2004 10:09:36 ET
Outgoing NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw was asked on MSNBC's HARDBALL Monday if the Bush White House has been tough with the press corps, citing as an example of Dick Cheney stipulating no NEW YORK TIMES reporters on his trips.
Brokaw said, "I think they have been too tough.
"The idea that this White House has not given Tom Friedman a long, in-depth interview is astonishing to me. I have had a very good relationship with them, I have gotten to interview the President a lot. I have had access on the phone and other areas and I have been very vigorous in my discussions with them. But no reporter that I know covering national politics and the international policies that are of such great concern today know as much about them as Tom Friedman does and they have completely shut out the NEW YORK TIMES."
Brokaw = elitist.
Friedman supported the Iraq war, to his credit, but he always has to end anything positive with some sort of slam at Bush, just so his liberal wife and friends will still talk to him.
About time. The whole press corps needs to be rebalanced.
Drudge and Freerepublic should get seats since our audience is so large....
Journalists amuse me with the thought that they have the right to know anything about anyone at anytime. They seem to think they have the right to ask a question and we have an obligation to answer.
Brokaw's attitude is typical of yesteryear's media. The assumption that Friedman or the NY Times deserves access because they are who they are is telling.
Just a friendly reminder -- Brokaw was booed by Oklahoma and Nebraska fans when it was announced at the OU/Nebraska game in Norman that he was in attendance.
Since then the Dems in this area have been praising Brokaw and dissing OU/Nebraska fans for booing. Been hilarious to read some of their letters to the editor and their spin on Brokaw and how fair and balanced he is -- right there you no he is anything but fair!
Why should the WH reward the NYT for their pack of lies and political agenda? They tried their damndest to derail Bush's reelection. What do they expect?
I have banned the whole New Yourk Slimes from my house.
Who knew Brokejaw was still alive.
Hasn't the President effectively kicked Helen Thomas to the curb as well?
Maybe if the NY Times would purge some of the communists out of their staff they might be a little more friendly.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Thanks! I'd forgotten.
He's asking to be lionized by the Times for his retirement.
Not a bad business plan.
The NYT gave up it's prestige and went partisan. Who cares about the NYT, they're losing power fast. In a few years, they have fewer readers than The Globe.
Brokaw is the least biased of the Jennings, Rather, Brokaw troika. But still biased. Which is why he thinks Friedman, who writes from the same viewpoint that the troika shows on the air, knows so much. I suspect that neither Friedman nor the big three personally know anyone who voted for Bush.
I remember watching Lynn Cheney on CSpan perhaps 10 years ago, she said the NYTimes was irrelevant.
Condi Rice cannot keep a straight face when confronted with moronic questions and statements. Ergo, no Tom Friedman interviews. The NYT is of little importance in getting out the administration's message. They just distort (or lie, if they think they can get away with it).
