CHICAGO (AP) Mayor Richard Daley's son, prompted by a lifelong desire to serve in the military, will soon report to active duty as an enlisted soldier in the Army's regular airborne infantry.
``It's been in the back of my mind for some time,'' Patrick Daley told the Chicago Sun-Times in Tuesday's editions. ``I left West Point during my freshman year when I was 18 years old and always remembered their motto, 'Duty, Honor and Country.' But I was so young and not really old enough to understand what it really meant. But I know now.''
Daley, 29, graduated with honors in June from the University of Chicago with a master's degree in business and could have pursued lucrative job offers from investment banking or private equity firms. But instead, he decided to join the Army and as an enlisted man.
``In the military, doors go up and out rather than down,'' he said. ``It's a close bet that I may make a career out of the military, and it's better to start out at the bottom.''
The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks also played a role in his decision, said Daley, one of Richard and Maggie Daley's four children, including Nora, Elizabeth and a second son, Kevin, who died.
His parents and close friends were not surprised by his plans, Daley said.
``Dad is very supportive and mom is doing just what mothers are supposed to do, worrying about her son,'' he said.
Daley said his activation date could be between Christmas and New Year's Day.
``There are many paths of service policeman, fireman, political and the military but it's an all-volunteer era,'' Daley said. ``I've always wanted to find a way to serve ... just like my grandfather and father. Think of it. It's amazing. I get to serve my country.''
Not true. He would have go to Officers Candidate School in order to become an Officer.
Many of today's enlisted troops and NCO's have BA's or BS's.
I understand Daily wanted to go in as an enlisted soldier. Hey, he just wants to be grunt. Nothing wrong with that. I did the same thing. For me, it was a GREAT experience to serve in U.S. Army Infantry. Going through Infantry Basic and Airborne at Ft. Benning will be no vacation, but I think he knows what it is all about.
I salute you Mr. Daley.
AIRBORNE!!! ALL THE WAY!! HOOOAH!!!
